Trees
I have planted trees but they are taking forever to grow. I started a new farm and can’t figure out how to cut down existing trees

You're right Biggles. When iillgib's answer to cut down a tree is Lumberjack and yours is Easy Dev Controls, This really isn't my kind of thread anyways. I'll see my way out.

Good luck guys.

Finally.

But as it has become clear: there isn't really any straight-up "realism-ready" options for low-cost/low-power removal of tree remains (stumps, branches, logs..) other than slightly extending your perception of "believable realism".

There are very few forestry assist tools that simulate the information gain you'd have by having a measuring tape on you without them being just an extra on the side of more.. cheaty.. features. You really have to adhere to the Rule of Honor when logging. It's that bad - but extremely enjoyable when you "get it", whatever your method might be.

Your best bet is to either to do it vanilla - via just chainsaw guesswork and practice (player can lift up to.. 150-200kilos? It's very easy to go over just by a little) OR checking out mods, yes, like Lumberjack (you can modify what features you want to use) or another more recent one (I just can't recall the name of it, sorry) that provide critical information and help tools to chainsaw usage. This new mod is really handy as even tho it, too, has some features that WILL BE seen as cheaty, 99% of them can be either toggled off completely or used as "soft aim-assist" kind of deal.

Some purist go up and beyond their ways to make sure the vanilla experience stays untouched but they usually fail to realize that the very start of most beginner Foresteers is just a chainsaw and unfortunately placed American Elm or Downy Serviceberry on at side of their yard. In-game "tutorials" don't offer much explanations for the player about what, and how, they should go about those 2 problematic trees that they'd want to get rid of but can't via Deco Menu (if can place trees from the menu, why can't you get rid of them in the same way FFS!).

Vanilla systems for logging are really barebones and lack countless critical bits (info, tools.. everything, really.) that would make the tree jobs much more accessible. And that's without accounting the problematic physics engine that just doesn't make any sense at times. Hell, vanilla systems actively try to block you from using your possible real-world knowledge and methods of removing certain types of "juvenile" trees!

What comes to starting out with forestry itself, you only got 2 gameplay options:
#1 - Invest your generational wealth into extremely expensive machinery and tools
or #2 - Start with chainsaw, some sort of Grapper and whatever else you might afford.

EDIT: There's a handy mod for low-cost and precise planting of saplings called "Hand Plant Saplings". Even if you're going for large-scale operations, this is a handy addition to your arsenal.

The amount of.. "extra help" you allow is up to you.
Just take note what I said above: There will be obstacles and tedium that you just.. can't work around easily.

Going forward your best bet is to invest into Spruce and Pines and 6+ meter log lengths in 2 year planting cycles. If you're playing on Silverrun Forest map, one of the new available Pines doesn't take as long to grow and yields almost the same so it, at least on paper, is superior to every other tree type. Unfortunately this type isn't available outside Silverrun.

If you're planning on doing "industrial forestry", you have to go with Evergreens. Spruce and regular(+Silverrun) Pines. You're cutters can't process leaf-trees at all and some of them are too small for fully mature Spruce.. without, again, a bit realism-stretching modded vehicles/tools.

Hand plant sapling it's my way to go mod whenever i'm gonna do any forestry, it makes more sense to plant a tree by hand than with a akward machinery.

And yes, pines are the best, they grow fast, are straight, no silly branches and yeld a lot of wood.

Back on track..

OP: Has any of our ramblings helped?
lol sort of, so i got a chainsaw, and have cut branches, but can't figure how out to rotate the chainsaw, i am using a mac just with the trackpad, and any mouse moves i make don't rotate it to cut the actual tree down.

sorry if you were offended, thanks for the help.
i figured it out, i connected a mouse, and i am able to turn the chainsaw.

Oh, yeah. You're 100% going to need either a mouse - or if you have one, a controller - for most of the chainsaw and logging machine work.

Some people swear by analog/joysticks for these jobs + they add a bit of realism as most of the machine control their booms via one.

Mouse movements can be tricky at first but become like a 2nd nature quite quickly.

thanks for the help, that is true.
On a side note, if you're waiting on smaller trees, you can cut them down since they don't grow, just remove them and plant new ones.

There is even a tree grow manager mod on modhub if the vanilla grow time takes too long, you can set grow time for evey kind of tree (quicker or even much slower if you prefer).
