Does anyone know what causes the game to freeze when I buy something, e.g. a building or other object in the building menu, buy it, place it and when I exit the building mode I can't do anything. The game is buggy, time passes, but I can't move my character and the camera moves to one side.

I hate to blame all problems on mods by default but I'd have to say this does sound like a mod problem or possibly a mod map. Do you have any build/painting/landscaping mods? Does it happen on a clean game on a base game map with no mods?

On a clean map without mods, this problem does not occur. So it's some mod's fault. The question is which one? I entered the map without any mods, apart from the speed camera modem (it was required), on the map where this problem occurs and everything works as it should.

I found the culprit, it's the Emergency Pack Beta mod. I don't know if he was messing with the map or other mods, but without this mod everything works fine.

Seems like I dodged a bullet with Emergency Beta.
Had it absolutely bork up and refuse updating itself few days ago.
Decided to uninstall it outright.

GIANTS should just pull it from the ModHub until they've come up with more stable/reliable beta version.
