I totally agree with you Rick
if it doesn't rain for a certain amount of time. field state: dry
if it rains for a certain short time. field state: damp/moist
if it rains for a certain medium time. field state: wet
it if rains for a long time: flooded/muddy
Dry
Would need rain or water sprayer to get the yield up. The dry soil is harder to penetrate wich could make cultivating, plowing and seeding equipment wear a tiny bit faster. Also more dust
Damp/Moist
This might be similar to what you have now when all field requirements like plowing, lime, fertilizer, rolling are met.
Wet
Still allright, but with a slightly negative impact on yield
Flooded
Slows down cultivating/plowing because of all the mud build up in the equipment and/or slipping tires. Would also impact crop yield because crops get to much water.
Also equipment like tractors and (combine) harvesters might get stuck, but this might require actual ground simulation kinda like Spin Tires/Mudrunner has, might be to much for now
This suggestion is perfect Rick. And making a mod or something for a water cannon. I can send pictures of the ones that is beeing used here in Norway
As well as when it is to wet or dry for longer periods of time, crops can wither, get rotten or die because of flooding and drying heat. Just as in real life. Not only how it affects equipment, but it schould do it as well
