Do you have to place the furnace and if so where is the best place thanks

Yes, you have to place it, yourself. Best place is wherever you want it. There should be some room close by the iron mine if you can buy the land around it.

There is an overgrown flat bit of land right by the mine where the path forks the furnace fits in fine and no need to buy the land.

i have mine as close as possible to the mine and have conveyors running from the pile of iron ore that feeds dirctly into the iron furnace :)

If yiu have the old sawmill there is room to place it there. However its a long drive from mine to old sawmill.
