How to give horses oats?

I've tried tipping it from a trailer, dumping it from a front loader, and also tried to put it in a feed mixer with hay but it won't let me do that either. Any help will be welcome.

Is your game just not recognizing Oats when you try to deliver them? I'm assuming it is accepting hay and straw? What stable or pen are you using? I have to ask these things because I have not had this problem. I'm just wondering if you aren't oriented correctly when trying to deliver the oats or if it could be a problem with the trailer you are using (i.e. you have the wrong dump side on the trailer designated)?

so it turns out the problem was that i built the horse pen on a hill in free mode and i guess the terrain was messing it up

Ah, interesting! I have gotten to the point now that I do a lot of terra forming before I place a building or structure including sometimes placing then destroying a structure and reforming the terrain to get if right before concluding. I'm going to assume that if you had it on a slope that the overload site was either above or below the trailers dump spot and thus it wouldn't work properly. Another new interesting learning moment. BTW, you are aware, some don't, that if you fill up the pen with one food and don't leave room for the other that you can't put in that other food. I actually created a spreadsheet to help me remember the ratios and how much of each type I can put in. It has helped incredibly.
