I am pretty sure thats how it works? A belt just picks up whatever it is near, transports it and drops it off to the other end, normally a trailer, but if there was another belt underneath it would transfer onto that belt, and then wherever it needs to go.
FarmerCop done a tutorial for belts in FS19, pretty sure it works the same way here?

Don't know about the actual "connecting" of belts however I haven't seen the belt you are describing, only Lizard belt I have is the vanilla one that is literally just a belt.
