Best to do contracts so you can get enough money to buy a house to sleep in, imo.
You can use the farmhouse to sleep and skip forward days. running at 120 speed alt tab is not necessary whatsoever. This is exactly as the in-game help guide tells you (and about 100 freaking steam discussions if you use the search tool).
I am doing this currently for hardmode to get a good set of starting cash to eventually buy permanent land.

Lots of mowing, lots of bailing and generally lots of driving around with the milk tank. Making silage, making hay and mixing food also takes up some time. The wheat field is just a little work once a year.
Generally I'd just play the game on a faster speed, if I didn't have much to do. The great thing about grass is, that it's there all year.
