I defeated Godrick the Grafted with holy damage, how did I do that?
Hi,

I defeated this boss easily using a +3 Uchigatana with Sacred Blade.

But this boss, according to the Wiki, is very resistant to sacred damage. And he also took very little damage from the Uchigata without me using the Sacred Blade.

And I know it wasn't the Uchigata's Hemorrhage effect, because he lost a lot of health with each basic attack due to the Sacred Blade's effect on the weapon.

Can anyone explain to me how this happened?

The weapon type/damage/effects system in this game seems very confusing to me.

Sacred blade adds holy damage to your weapon, and that's on top of the weapon's base damage, so it's not a replacement.

Essentially, you'll always be doing more damage with it active than without, even if the opponent is resistant.

In Godrick's case, his holy damage negation is only 40%, so sacred blade's added damage is still quite sizeable.

You hit him until he died. Resistances only reduce the damage taken. That's how it works.

I killed Elden Beast with Cipher Pata, holy resistance be damned.

your pure skill simply leaked into the blade to give it the power of a million jar kids

when you add holy damage, that represents like 56.8% of the total damage, and if you consider that he absorbs like 40%, then the damage reduction is equivalent to a 23% of the total damage. Finally, Uchigatana keeps the blood loss, despite you've added sacred damage
Just finished Volcano Manor, killing manserpents (which are immune to fire) with the Godslayer's Greatsword. How did I do that? By hitting them until they died.

Another thing to note is that Sacred Blade does not scale, so it's disproportionately strong in the early game and falls off later on. I can't see the exact numbers on your weapon, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was something like a +25% damage buff on the weapon. And because of how the defense formulas work, it's a lot stronger on a weapon already doing holy damage.

He has "reasonable" holy resistance like the rest of his family (except Rykard) but nothing nuts....Even Malenia has a lot of holy resistance.

Now if you want to experience a trully ballbusting and miserable boss fight try to kill the rotten crystallian trio only with glinstone pebbles......Hell im sure the uchigatana you used for Godrick will make them laugh at you.
