Bro, just kill the invalid dragon in Caelid.

As Finite mentioned above, the helpless dragon in S.E. Caelid is the best early bonanza for runes. Be sure to pop a GPFF just before he is going to die for many thousands of extra runes.

And while you are there, pop into the fort, kill the bats (carefully), go up the ladder and pick up the half medallion in the chest (needed to use the elevator to Altis).

Specifically, they're talking about the absolutely GIANT dragon east of the swamp that is so big she can't even stand up. She has tons of HP but can't fight back at all. I suggest putting the Poison Mist ash of war on a bleed weapon and beating her until the bleed procs get her HP down low, then use the ash to poison her and finish her off.

The key is to wait until the death animation starts playing, then rest at the nearby site of grace. If you're fast, you can kill her then run back to the grace on your horse, but it's safer to let poison finish her off while you wait by the grace. She'll twitch when her death animation starts.

By doing this, you'll get 50k runes for killing her, but she will respawn. So you can do this over and over for easy runes. Once you get the five Dragon Hearts for killing her, though, she won't respawn anymore, which is why you need to rest at the grace before the death animation finishes.
Thanks for all the replies I am grateful but I would like to know are there any other creatures or areas that give more runes? Im currently level 81
You can try farming the vulgar militia near the Bestial Sanctum. It's pretty easy to sneak up behind them and backstab them. Dragonbarrow is a late game zone, so all the enemies there are unusually tough but give significantly more runes. I'm not sure this is actually faster than farming Greyoll, though.

If you want to get to the next good rune farming spot, you'll need to do Varre's questline. This gives you access to a new end game area. There's a spot atop the cliff where you can shoot across a gap at a bird, and the bird will run off the edge and die. Very fast.

Another tip is to get the Golden Scarab Talisman. It increases the amount of Runes you get from killing enemies and bosses. If you don't know where it is, just look up a quick YouTube tutorial. You may also want to get "Flame, Cleanse Me" Incantation, and/or the Mushroom Armor, as the location for the Talisman has a bunch of Scarlet Rot. Hope this helps!
