ELDEN RING

ELDEN RING

View Stats:
Occasional lag spikes on a high-end PC.
I recently bought a prebuilt PC with following parts:
-Ryzen 7 9800x3d
-Gigabyte Radeon RX 7900 XTX GAMING OC 24G
-32 gb RAM
-2 TB storage

Game does run smoothly at 60 fps, however, at random times my game lag spikes/freezes for like half a second and the FPS drops. This happens multiple times when I play and it's not a huge deal but definitely annoying. I also think my PC is literally exceeding the required specs to even play Elden Ring, so it should be able to run without any lag, right?

I tried disabling Device Association Root Enumerator and verified the game's files on Steam, but it didn't seem to work. I feel like I noticed a little less lag spikes than when it was turned on and when I hadn't verified the files, but I don't know.

Does anyone know why this could be happening? Could I check in any way, like is there some sort of thing I can download that tells me why it lag spikes?

I don't think it's my PC that is the problem cause when i was playing Black Myth Wukong it didn't lag spike even a single time (ok maybe like once but that's it). Is there some setting i need to turn off or what is it?

I had a similar problem! In my case, it was a bluetooth device disconnecting that caused a brief freeze. Mine was a bluetooth mouse. Turning my bluetooth devices off while playing solved it. For example, my bluetooth mouse has a little switch under it you can use to toggle it off, so I just do that whenever I'm playing Elden Ring and no more problems.

Hope that's your problem too and I just fixed it!

This is mostly because the game doesn't precompile shaders. At the moment, there's no solution for this, at least on Windows, unless that some day Fromsoftware implements a shader compilation system.

On Steam for Linux, Valve distributes the shaders of the game, which are pre-compiled as vulkan shaders the first time that you execute the game, or when you run the game after a driver update. This prevents that kind of stuttering, and the game runs really smooth.

Oh thank you! I will check this out. I do have a xbox controller connected to my pc via bluetooth, I did not know that could make a pc lag though.

Wait, what is Valve? Is that something I can use to remove stuttering?

Well, the exact thing you described is what I was experiencing too (just intermittent, very brief mini-freezes every 10-20 minutes of play or so). I'd check whatever bluetooth devices you have connected and see if those are the issue. It'd be weird if it was the same controller you use to play ER since that shouldn't be disconnecting/reconnecting while playing.

The DLC needs serious optimization, so that is the reason for the spikes if you're in those areas.

If the lag spikes are only 0.5 seconds then it's probably just the the shaders compiling as you enter new areas / encounter different player ghosts etc.
If that's the case then you should find the lag spikes reduce over time.
Windows does a device refresh randomly, if you have two screens, open device manager on that screen and you'll notice the lag spike happens when it refreshes. its the same with Sekiro. its clearly something in the engine.

I see you have disabled device root enumerator but have you also stopped SSDPSRV in services? it doesn't completely stop it but i can play for about 1hr before it has a mini lag
it tends to happen more if you are using a controller. if you are not using controller to play, disconnect it.

Remember to restart/enable these services when you finish playing

2 tb storage means what ? one m.2 ssd at the slot next to the cpu and no other drives ?

i ask because 2tb storage can mean anything.

I think it’s 2 tb ssd, but can I check this anywhere?

if it is a m.2 at the correct slot this should be running almost everywhere stable 60 FPS
my 7950x3d with 32 GB (two modules 6000 MHz) and 2 TB pci express 4.0 has no problems to run this game stable, there are some effects and locations where i get a small 3 till 5 FPS drop for a second but no stutters

I am using a controller and my mouse is connected to my pc as well, so I can go back and forth between Google to see what the next quest there is in Elden Ring. Do you mean that I should disable SSDPSRV or not when I am playing with a controller?

What would happen if it wasn’t a ”m.2” at the correct slot? Is that something I can just fix quickly with a setting or? This is what it is called ” Samsung 990 PRO M.2 NVMe SSD 2TB”

And my game does run stable 60, and is smooth, it’a just that then and now it stutters, but it still overall runs smoothly. I’m tired of it and just want a solution, but can’t find any.

Do you play with controller or mouse? I heard someone say having a mouse connected but playing with a controller will make the pc stutter cause it is like checking for the mouse every now and then or something. So I just wanna know if you have both mouse and controller connected to your pc.

Samsung 990 PRO M.2 NVMe SSD 2TB is a m.2 pci express 4.0 SSD it should be installed at the m.2 slot near the CPU to provide full potencial, if it is installed at the second or third m.2 slot it would only run in pci express 3.0 and not via the CPU controller what could result in a latency lag.

My pc was prebuilt, can I maybe send a photo to you of the pc? Could you through a photo be able to tell if it’s installed right?

But it’s also weird though, cause when I played Black Myth Wukong it didn’t lag a single time, and I mean not a SINGLE time. So that makes it feel like there is something wrong with Elden Ring, not my pc?
