You generally want to split the spirits in three tiers tiers, similar to how the game organizes them. The lower cost, weaker spirits that embody low tier enemies, often in groups. Then the mid tier spirits that typically show more unique properties, and are less often spawned as a group. Then the named spirits that require Ghost Gloveworts for upgrades instead of Grave Gloveworts, these along with the category of Puppet spirits are the more powerful options you have. But from there, you also have to consider exactly what their strengths are. A fire damage dealing spirit who costs more than a spirit who only deals physical damage won't be useful against a boss who's mostly resistant or immune to fire.
Then consider the amount of spirits in a summon and perhaps how exactly they attack. Some summons are good for damage, some for status inflicting, others for stance pressure and stun locking enemies. It's a case to case scenario, obviously excluding some of the most powerful spirit summons who end up being a good option for most situations.
and my impression is it is not worth it to increase Mind only for Spirit Ashes.
Mausoleum Soldiers, Greatshield Soldiers, Messmer Soldiers or Leyndell Soldiers
will solve any problem you may have and at low cost.
Putrid Corpses are excellent and cheap tanks.
Those guys are as annoying to enemies as they are to us.
There is a 132 fp cost one that is the best because of the incidental burn damage from Super Duper Whatever move and her ability to dodge most attacks. She can't solo late game bosses but a great addition if you like overwhelming force or care about damage optimization.
The other is 108 fp cost that draws aggro a lot and occasionally does damage. He is a DLC exclusive. He is very good for harder bosses because gives you a lot of breathing room. He will die though so you have to be quick about your damage.
Against Margit (I'm assuming this is who you mean; this is an open world game) the jellyfish ash is tanky and can poison him.
Just South of the Castle, you can find the Soldiers of Godrick Spirit summon. Slightly cheaer then wolves, summons 2 Soldiers who use mix tactics & have shields. They are my go to early game for their survivability.
The Fang Imps that you can get as a starter are also very good. They are evasive, can throw bombs & cause Bleed.
Mimic Summon cost HP and can be the best summon. It copies you, uses your stats for item REQ, Spells Gear & Quick inventory. If you do not meet the requirements for gear & Spells, they won't work. It does not get boost from the Rune of Godrick. It A.I. was nerfed so not as good at it used to be. Unlike every other Spirit Ash, it is susceptible to Grabs & Deathblight.
The more Straight forward your build, the better the mimic will do.
