Nightreign is a 3D action game diablo-like with Fortnite theme of closing area where you loot and prepare yorself but when the area closes in you (or yourr party) you have a chance to face a boss, there is no character creation but characters you can select, you can be revived midfight and dont seem like you lose much, maybe your loot, if you die.
So dont make any difference if you play Nightreign before or after Elden Ring as that thing is a completely different game solely related to the fact it have some ER characters (NPCs and enemies, maybe bosses too) and theme to it.
If you're looking for the best Souls game then you should Absolutely get Elden Ring + DLC, even if Nightreign was out today.
Nightreign is essentially a battle royal/roguelite game executed with Elden Ring's gameplay mechanics.
You will playthrough to the end of Nightreign in a single gameplay session and will keep replaying it.
That's not a bad thing if you're into that style, but if you wait to get Nightreign, I can almost guarantee that you'll get Elden Ring after anyway because it has much more content.
I don't think it matters if you beat Elden Ring before or after Nightreign comes out because the Elden Ring community is unlikely to shift all of their time to Nightreign anyway.
They're very different games, played for different reasons.
Try asking your question on the Nightreign forum, and I am sure that you'll get the same answer.
Nightreign rips exact copies of Elden Ring maps. The animations, controls are going to be very similar to Elden Ring in a general sense. Even Vaati literally said 'this is Elden Ring' in his impression video.
There are big differences (like no fall damage, ultimate, leveling, battle royal mechanics etc), but at the core Nightreign is just a large scale Elden Ring mod.
Don't worry. Play the real game first if you can. Elden Ring's base game is fantastic, tremendously rich experience, and Shadow of the erdtree...is mostly cosmetic (doesn't have a whole lot to do), but it has some great additions in terms of gear, new weapon classes, and boss fights.
Nightreign might be fun for a few weeks or months, but won't have the same replayability.
Definitely won't take hundreds of hours to (truly, not just platinum) 100%
If you are looking at what to throw anywhere from 40 to 60 bucks into, definitely get Elden Ring's dlc if you haven't yet, and take your time with getting Nightreign, don't worry.
They can copy all they want from maps, enemies and NPCs, etc, the gameplay itself is far too different so no it is not the same thing in the slightest.
It is the same as saying DMC or Sekiro is the same thing as Dark Souls 1 or Demon Souls if even buttons and characters are the same (ok, I exaggerated here? Yes, But gameplay is important not just "looks, locations, NPCs and enemies or input layouts")
