Moreso risking a virus / malware after buying the game legitimately. Pirated version can't be played online so what even is the point?

Renaming the executables is the "wrong" way because Steam thinks the renamed files are corrupted and replaces them after any update which is why your game went online even though you didn't intend to.

Not that their previous "anticheats" were any better though. But at least you were able to use some mods.
