We need a bank, man
Losing runes upon death is the most discouraging part of this game. Btw I'm a noob to Souls games, so perhaps they've always been that way and most everyone has just long accepted it as part of the game. For some reason I couldn't get into Dark Souls, but I did get into Elden Ring.. and this rune thing is killing me. Well, my enjoyment or will to play the game at times. Fighting through a castle or area, killing 20 enemies who are at/above your level a little, and something manages to kill you. Now you have to fight your way back through those same enemies if you hope to see your runes again, and that ends up being half, give-or-take, of the time you spend playing. Then the first NPC on your run somehow ends up killing you and your runes are gone. You're level 60+ and you almost had enough for another level - gone. At that point I just close the game sometimes. Like ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. Someone might respond and say that's what makes it 'difficult', but I would counter them and say no, it just makes it annoying. Without the rune-loss system... or say if you had a bank you could deposit runes into at Sites of Grace, thereby making whether or not you lose runes your responsibility, you'd still die as much; you'd still have to battle your way repeatedly through an area if that's what it takes. It just wouldn't be with that preoccupying/overshadowing concern of "oh god the runes that enable my progression are going to be lost". ♥♥♥♥ THIS MECHANIC.

Use the runes when you have them. Save the rune items you found for when you are just a little shy of leveling up. Use runes for consumables if you cant level and you're going into a hard area.

Its always been that way, and yeah dont expect it to go anywhere.

If you are in danger of losing runes, try slapping on a twiggy cracked tear. It gives you three whole minutes of safety. If you lost your runes and you need to pick them up because you lost a lot, slap on a twiggy cracked tear on the run back to them, and even if you get killed on the way, you won't lose the runes either. Not to mention all the sacrificial twigs. The game gives you tools to never have to lose any runes. I went through the whole DLC without losing runes because of this, despite dying who knows how many times.

Ahah, you just got to go back to your runes calmly, and don't rush because of anger and lose them.
I need 800k+ runes to level up, i played all souls, and man you would have a heart attack knowing how much runes i lose in total. :D
Take the souls games like a zen training, the game will spit in your face, troll you and piss on you. But you got to stay calm =)

The runes you lose in the beginning, that seem like enormous amounts, are just very small amounts later on. You can always get runes back, just try again. And again. While losing a big amount of runes can be frustrating, you need to get to that point where you're having fun trying again. The mechanic is really good, imo, because it shows you something about yourself.

Surely others have complained, or feel the same way? Dark Souls just did away with the whole 'XP' system, on which RPG's used to run/still do?

I'm not a rage-quitter, either. When I play competitive games, I can take being beaten by a team or opponent for hours.. because nothing is lost, and experience is gained. But this ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ rune system..

There is also something of a pseudo bank. You can buy smithing stone (1) for 200 runes and sell them for 100 runes, allowing you to "store" half the value of your current rune count.

I don't have the Twiggy Cracked Tear.. and I only have 3 Sacrificial Twigs. I haven't used any of them because given how much I die, 3 would be gone in an hour or so. Unless I can craft Sacrificial Twigs somewhere or at some point, then I don't see how the game has given me the tools to recover my runes, of which I've lost thousands and thousands -_-

“Doctor: 'You do not fear death. You think this makes you strong. It makes you weak.'

Bruce: 'Why?'

Doctor: 'How can you move faster then possible, fight longer then possible, without the most powerful impulse of the spirit? The fear of death.'

Bruce:'I do fear death. I fear dying in here while my city burns. And there's no one there to save it.'

Doctor: 'Then make the climb.'

Bruce: 'How?'

Doctor: 'As the child did - without the rope. Then fear will find you again.”

it's not the same but it is fear of losing those damned runes that makes this game fun.I don't think without having something to lose you will even enjoy the game or even try that hard or think carefully on how to approach a boss or a enemy.

50% return... I'll take a look at all the infinite buyables and see if there's anything higher.

This is very much a staple of all souls games, and something you're just unfortunately going to have to get used to. I do have some tips though:

1. Golden runes act as a store of wealth, so use them only when you need them (preferably to level up). They're more plentiful than you think if you stockpile them. In many corners of the game, there are sets of small coffins that have lots of golden runes. Some are on the map, some aren't.
2. Most of the time it's decently easy to tell when you're coming up on a boss. If you're not feeling confident, don't fight one with a large store of runes. You'll have to go back in to get them should you die. And just generally don't go in dangerous places with a lot of runes. That's a good rule of thumb.
3. There ARE ways to mitigate rune loss. Sacrificial Twigs can be equipped as talismans, and are lost in place of your runes when you die. Naturally, however, they aren't very common. Additionally, the Gold-Pickled Fowl Foot consumable will give you an temporary increase in runes gained from enemies. They're not super hard to craft.
4. Just accept that sometimes you're gonna lose runes. It really sucks, trust me, I've been in your exact position. It took me forever to get used to it when I first starting playing souls games. And even now, sometimes I lose tons of runes. You've just gotta pick yourself back up. Step back and take a break if you really need it. No shame in that.

Hope you manage to have fun with the game, but you should know that this mechanic probably isn't going anywhere. It's been around for over a decade.

After you progress enough to a certain area you wil get 11K to 13K every 20s and after you beat the game you can get from 40K to 60K every 20s.
"Runes" is not a probllem in this game and if you are losing runes when you had enough to lvl up that is a problem of management of your runes.
ZTL-Altima Jul 16, 2024 @ 1:07pm
Losing runes is just a scarecrow mechanic. Dying in Souls games means nothing. If you catch your souls, cool, if not, who cares. Spending runes after each boss kill is more than enough to make a overpower character and you should never farm.
