ELDEN RING
I'm getting excessively sick of this lock-on system
It somehow always manages to lock on to the wrong target every time it wold be the most inconvenient for you to have that happen.

Dude rushing straight at you? It locks on to the guy BEHIND you and makes you turn your back on the one that's actually attacking you.

Try to lock on to the giant enemy crab? it will invariably lock on to all the small trash crabs that don't even have attacks and are more doodads than anything.

Round a corner and find a sorcerer enemy? It locks on to the aristocrat that's covering in the bushes behind and to the right of him, making you turn and lose sight of the sorceror just as he's charging up a shotgun spell.

And trying to swing at things without locking on is just a crap shoot. It hits when it feels like hitting.

you can switch targets with the right stick.
every now and then i'll lock onto something through a wall.
NEVER use lock on for melee in souls games, it gets you killed. In the first game it was deadly 90% of the time so I learned to never use it it in melee. It takes a while to get good with no lock on but I have have played every souls game with no melee lock . Dodge to win in these games. Dont zerg and you will be fine.
Agreed, and the lock-on system wouldn't even be necessary if the game had proper melee combat like Kingdoms of Amalur or Assasin's Creed. Fromsoft either can't do it, or has intentionally kept it this way for the sake of their "ToTalLy HaRdCoRe FoR rEaL GaMeRZ" reputation.

assassin's creed literally auto locks you on enemies when you attack

I've had that game force me to attack someone I didn't want to multiple times. Much worse than fromsoft's lock on.

It's a soft lock though, meaning you will attack whoever you're facing. At least I don't recall having any problems with it. It also helps that your character is much more agile, doesn't get locked into animations, and doesn't get constantly staggered by poke attacks. My favorite melee system though has to be the Batman Arkham series, and those games which copied it to various degrees.
I agree the lock on is a bit clunky. I almost wish they had a lock on fighting style (one where you specifically focus on a single enemy) and a crowd fighting style where if you didn't lock on. But it's FromSoft...

Yeah because AC isn't trying to have any kind of engaging combat and is catering to button mashers.

Best melee combat I've seen is in Nioh 2. Has the same lock on as fromsoft but the camera is way better and the character is a lot more agile

I will if I'll ever have trouble falling asleep
NEVER use lock on for melee in souls games, it gets you killed.

that is terrible advice -- lock-on is a tool, and it should be part of your kit.

i'll get players in ds1 i know followed the 'no lock-on' advice and it's actually just free backstabs for me. like, here's that in motion:

once a player like me sees that you're not locking on, ever, it's over. there is a time and a place for locked-on and locked-off, and you probably won't learn them if you treat either like a playstyle instead of just a tool in your kit.

While not horrible advice for DS1 as you could only roll in four directions, leading you to go to locations not anticipated, Elden Ring is far more refined and locking on is generally helpful. There are a few exceptions such as deathrite birds where the camera can freak out.

CB is correct, this should be seen as a tool that's useful much of the time but not in every situation. Manual aiming is very possible and to your advantage to master. You may need to aim your camera higher than what is expected as the over the shoulder view will make your character aim low when not locked on. Experiment and learn to incorporate it into your playstyle.
