There is really nothing in Elden Ring that is the 'perfect' answer for every single challenge. At least, that has been my experience.
half damage, does not close distance has a dlc late game talisman, procs bleed and frost slower, the posture damge does not make up for the damage lost.
raises effectiveness of weapon
charged R2s often get extra damage from unique attack values
stagger more often/easier
can still block with lots of weapons to decent effect
drip
Also, power stance kinda got a bunch of nerfs like status build up isn't great.
Also the weight being another issue depending on the weapon combo and armor you are going for.
I used a 2 handed greatsword type
weapon like blasphemous in my first run and enjoyed it. Some talisman makes it even better for damage or reduce stamina consumption while blocking.
Oh never occurred to me that you could still guard counter while 2h. interesting
skill issue
Shields are, ultimately, a crutch. They are there to cover you from things that you can't dodge. And if you can dodge it - you should, rather than block, because its the same effect but at less stamina cost. Now, counter-attacks have made shielding a lot better and more useful than it was even up to Dark Souls 3, but two-handing is still the ultimate offensive move.
Even if you're running a Keen Curved Sword of any type with 99 DEX - there is still an advantage to two-handing. Despite what your AR chart says - attacks will still deal notably more damage because FromSoft are quirky like that, but far more importantly - they deal a lot more poise / stance damage ensuring that the victim will stagger and open up for a critical more often.
There's also a whole other variety of things that two-handing improves:
- some weapons tend to attack faster
- improved stance damage
- no bouncing off shields and other hard objects
- activated poise / more poise during attacking, if applicable
- some weapons gain a far superior target tracking when locked on
While i, personally, f*cking love shields for utility and general feeling of safety - two handing is perfectly viable.
I currently run a DEX/INT no-shields character with Great Epe and he's been doing fine so far and its pretty apparent to me that i seem to be doing better when two-handing.
i made a video comparing the two on the same weapon.
