Light or Medium is mandatory. Heavy and above is very bad.
One critical thing to understand about armor in Elden Ring. Until you get much later in the game, armor does not allow you to Face-Tank enemies. Even later in the game, a very specific build style is required for that sort of play.
For most of the game, your armor has one function. To prevent you from being one or two shotted by hits. Giving you a chance to drink a flask.
You need to keep your equipment load at light or medium in order to be able to effectively dodge and roll.
Generally speaking Elden Ring is not a game about defense. It is a game about offense and opportunity to deliver it.
Just light Knight was K***ht, it's tradition.
And now I find myself wondering how the folks at From pronounce the "vag" in "vagabond."
...because just like the letters in the middle of "knight," there's a big ol' phonetic gap between the base word and the one they're trying to keep people from spelling out.
I'm 100% referring to it as Vajabond from now on.
knight? well it has shorthand for a racist word in the middle, its gotta go, heaven forbid they add an exception for the specific word "knight"
vagabond? well thats shorthand crass way to say women genitals, some bull.
does this game even block ♥♥♥♥ or anything adjacent? ive never seen someone try
edit: well it seem steams does, already better at it then from
This is absolutely what I was hoping for.
And I, too, will use this pronunciation from now on. "Be off with you, vajabond! The very whiff of you curls my nostril hairs."
More seriously, and back on topic, OP, when you're looking at weight class, your roll speed and distance change in relationship to the percentage of your maximum equipment load that your character is wearing, and includes your armor, shield (if any), and all weapons slotted for hot-swapping.
The percentage has varied a bit over the course of the Souls series, but ER seems most forgiving in that regard. I'm going off memory, so someone correct me if I'm wrong here, but over 70% of your equipment load will produce what are known as "fat rolls." This roll uses a slow animation where your character essentially throws themselves at the ground and then slowly rolls back up. They hit and damn near come to a full stop before rising to their feet--and the distance traveled during the animation is negligible.
Medium rolls are between 40-70%, and cover more distance/animate faster, providing both greater retreat from an attacking enemy and more i-frames to boot.
Light rolls start at 39% (again, going off memory here, so I may be off base), and get faster/cover more distance as the percentage drops. A true "light" roll (25% equipment load or less) essentially looks like a diving somersault, and can be used to either rapidly create or close distance with a target.
Bottom line: your weight is going to impact your movement more than anything, so you should try to frame your equipment around your desired load. If you want to go heavy armor and tower shield, a high load can be workable, because you'll be able to soak a lot of punishment.
If you're using lighter armor and a small shield--or none at all--you may want to be faster on your feet for those big hits your targe won't tank.
