It depends, the hammer looks like it's only tossed with R2, the knives get thrown no matter what button you press and the spears seem almost completely like any other spear from what I've seen.

The new throwing weapon types are completely focused on throwing attacks. The weapons thrown via r2 are just entries into existing weapon types, so it makes sense.
