I don't think there is a hint. Also I wouldn't leave anyone with those merchants... o_O
This games quest lines suck and I love it. I haven't been so captivated with a game since Oblivion released, or maybe the first time playing the Mass Effect series.
I was amazed that there are a few NPCs in ER that actually have a good ending, or at least survive ;)
Boc is a weak creature, with an incredibly mild mind, who lives in a very depressing world of cruelty and death. He only survived due to his mom, who loved him for what he was. It makes perfect sense that getting reborn into something he's not would only make him weaker, and would also make him feel as if he betrayed his mom's wishes. Thus... suicide.
Still though, Boc's ending is pretty happy as long as you don't give him the larval tear. Just tell him he's beautiful, because he is. :)
