Just installed Elden Ring and already frustrated

I'm an old time gamer so keyboard and mouse is for me. In all games I can reassign keys to actions as I see fit. One of those assignments is moving forward. I always play the right mouse button to move forward. For whatever reason I can not reassign this function to the R mouse button in ER. Same for the G key which I use as my pickup/use key. In this game it's the map. I can get by with this but the mouse button is a big deal to me. Can anyone help me with reassigning the R mouse button? Sure would appreciate the help. BTW I had no trouble reassigning keys in Dark Souls (3). Same production company?

Have you tried any 3rd party software for keyboard and mouse?
Like razer synapse. There is probablčy also something on the internet where you can bind that the right klick of the mouse is a W from a keyboard and vice versa

you need a mouse that can support it
but right click move forward ... you might wanna rethink that for this game.

i bind a ton of stuff but not the attack keys on the mouse

30yo PC gamer who always prefers KBM. Souls games are the only games I use a controller for. I rather not play the game at all than play it on KBM.
My brain just cannot remember the complex control scheme on KBM.

a lot of japanese companies are not friendly with how they allow you to bind things. Most are stuck in the past for this. I swear like half the japanese games do this lmao. BUt most also have the excuse that theyre not very high budget if you can consider that an excuse.

Its why I couldnt get into dark souls as easily, because they bind KICK to moving up, and the attack button. Well I move a lot when playing so often I kick when I wanna attack lol.

Im a 56 year old and i play all the ds games on K/M and have 100% them all

Glad to know there are some older players out there. FYI I'm 72. It seems to me there is no good reason, at this level of price and function, to not make every key assignable. I see that there are reasons, in this game, to use both R & L buttons for combat but I can solve that via transfers to keys of my choice, that work for me. If I have to use a left hand key for movement, that freezes my hand in place on the KB and makes the other move altering keys unaccessible considering I have to play at the top of my game to overcome diminishing digital response times. So, after spending $64 on this game that I may not be able to play I'm, as we used to say back in the day, Pissed. I have a controller but I am not good with it and where most of you have an unlimited horizon to hone your skills, I do not. I do appreciate the responses and attempts to help. Roll

FromSoft is pretty janky on pc releases honestly, they have gotten better every game but are still behind.

To Mr Smiles-a-Lot, They produced Dark Souls 3 I believe. I played that and was able to reassign any of the keys I needed for game play. So ER seems to be a step backward from my perspective. That would be the "E" key in my universe. ;-) And... why on this mud ball of a world would they assign the map function to "G"? I don't get it. Is Map in Japanese an ideogram that starts with the equivalent of "G"?

Sorry OP im going to be that guy.

Im playing since i was a kid, Spectrums, Amiga,PC DOS games, master system, Megadrive, Super Nintendo,Saturn, Playstation, old high end PCS with vodoo monster, Dreamcast and Playstation 2,3,4. So yeah im not a old gamer im a trilobite.
For a time i was unable to see myself playing with a console controller in PC, even i completed Dork Souls 2 with mouse and keyboard.
Then i cant remember when a ex GF gifted me a Xbox for my bday. I barely touched the console but the controller...oh boy straight to the PC.

Since then every game requiring precise aiming gets played with keyboard and mouse (both are the best of the best a naga huntsman the keyboard and the moust another naga i cant remember the serie.) But plataformer, fighting and souls? my new and shiny transparent X-box controller. This is the way to play them (unless you have a very personal motive making them an awful choice.
Its time to give a controller a serious try and change your way of playing.
Do it for yourself.

Use AutoHotkey if you want to reassign binds the game doesn't let you use. I use it to have tab as my menu key in ER and ds1, and to use my side mouse buttons in ds2, but you can do more complicated things with it.

Just remember to have

#If WinActive("ahk_exe eldenring.exe") ;; your game exe here

So the script stops working when you switch windows

I played the other games fine on keyboard and mouse, it just takes more time to get it down. Unfortunately Fromsoft has never been keen on user friendliness, so you may have to use a 3rd party program like mentioned in here to rebind.

Hmm lets see. Cringy profile, collection of games, no manners, best thing it have to says "use a third party program" and finally tries to put its opinion over the other posters. Also first post trying to start a "flame" war in the thread. Detritus so back to you OP.

Controllers are extremly cheap those days, dont look for complicated soultions with the keyboard and mouse.....i was like you, couldnt see myself playing in my PC with a controller (always had a console for that) and boy here i am......

Try a controller, they are cheap enough and if it "clicks" you will be able to play better not only Elden Ring.
