God of War dropped 5 days before the Nominations because it was too chicken ♥♥♥♥♥ to go against Zelda next year and didn't want to lose, but oh Well, it's a good game, but did NOT deserve Game of the Year.
Elden Ring deserved Game of the Year for many reasons, great story, great bosses, A LOT OF REPLAY value, different builds, characters, changes from story, many side quests, a lot of bosses...my God, it has it all. Yeah, the PVP but the DLC hasn't dropped and it's already a massive game, My God Caelid, Haligtree, all of Nokrom, more than half the bosses is all optional, what other game does that? Nothing is stuck behind a pay wall, take notes Call of Duty and Bethesda.
It's all there for you, a FULL GAME, everything we've been asking AAA titles to give us, a full $60 game and Elden Ring is just that. Nothing is behind a pay wall.
Every Xenoblade game suffers from the same half active gameplay, unfortunately not everyone can get into it. I get sleepy playing XC2 even though it's one of my favorite games, same for XCX.
Elden Ring on the other hand is based on one of the most satisfying and popular gameplay styles out there. No wonder Soulslike is a thing.
1. 80% of the content is copy-pasted from 1 & 3.
Erdtree Avatar = Asylum Demon
The various recoloured knights = Lothric knights
Infantry & soldiers = Lothric Soldiers
Almost every weapon art is either a reused anim from DS3 or Sekiro.
2. The story is the same as the souls games too, just with another lick of paint.
Broken prophecy, gods are bad, random 'mystery' item descriptions that make you make up the story as you go along (or go on a schizo investigation that inevitably leads to this setting's version of Velka) World is broken, Fix or doom, etc.
It's not a bad game, but once you've played the first dark souls, you've played them all essentially. We're just buying map packs & quality of life updates at this point.
Hot take which doesn't deserve attention.
