Dwarf fortress's official release comes to mind.
The reason I framed my question that way is because I think sometimes people want to feel that GOTY = perfect game. When that's not what it is.
I liked Elden Ring, so I'm glad it won, but I also haven't played any of its competitors. So maybe I would have liked those games too. But sometimes the winner of these things win just because the competition wasn't as good.
Happens in sports too. Rarely does the winner of a thing create life-defining quality, which I think is what people expect as the winner of things.
Also may i recommend Ashen? really good game.
