Should I have killed patches?
I killed him before he got to speak and I assumed he would be an NPC like in other souls games

I'm not sure but I don't think it's a big deal. If you kept him alive then he would become a merchant.

he's a vendor and has a questline but you don't miss much by not doing it

You miss out on a couple of items and an armor set, but there's not much you can do about it now.

If you know him from other Souls games... why would you kill him like that?

You will miss out on a few items. Some of them could have been very handy like a Shackle that helps in two boss fights. You will also have no access to his questline and with that to a whole armor set and a weapon.
Patches would also have been the only person that later on would be able to sell you an infinite amount of Fan Daggers. The last one won't be that bad if you don't want to do PvP/Invasions.

As others mentioned, since he's dead you won't be able to do his questline, but that's relatively minor.

If you give his bell bearing to the merchant at Roundtable hold, you can still buy things from his initial shop.

Yesnt. On one hand, do it, he drops a +7 spear. Nothing too fancy but free weapon and if you want every weapon you can just take that as a shortcut. At the same time his questline also gives you the bullgoat armor set (aka the heaviest armor in the game with the best poise) So the answer isnt whether you should kill him just when. You could have pulled off his questline waited until he leaves and THEN kill him to get everything from him. Basically kill rykard, then go to the shaded castle, take his thing and kill him there to get everything from him. The last part of his questline is irrelevant unless you really want an emote

Kill him after his quests for emotes, weapons, and his leather armor.

good point
Personally, I don't kill him until he shows up at the Shaded Castle. At that point his Bell Bearing is upgraded with unlimited Fan Daggers.
Patches is the main character, we're all just living in his world.

What the twist!? M. Night Shyamalammadingdong ending.
♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Patches trolled me to the highest degree when I thought he died. Been best buds since that weird lava area in Demon's Souls with the giant worms.
