Not related to alt-tabbing I think the screen just froze. Used DDU and reinstalled drivers, let's see how that goes now...
I heard people having issues with the game and their screens as of late.
Make sure you're in borderless window mode and I think you should be fine with alt-tabbing but, since you are clearly saying you're not fine, maybe also reinstall your video card drivers and see if that helps.
If you can use DDU, see a guide on youtubes on how to use it properly. I booted up in safe mode, uninstalled GPU drivers (used DDU), restarted. Then I installed Nvidia drivers and am about to test if all works well.
Monitor needs to calibrate each time that it initializes fullscreen and doing this too often might break something like specifically your GPU.
I don't want to needlesly scare you but I had that experience once in Battlefield 3, where I was alt tabbing and wondering why the screen went dark constantly (like in your case you said it's also happening to you), and my GPU broke after doing that just a couple of times. My first experience with AMD and my last since then but....
Fullscreen isn't for alt-tabbing unless it's an emergency but even then rather close the game. Borderless is like fullscreen but it allows you to alt-tab and it's made for this purpose I believe.
There is no disadvantage running your game borderless, again as a matter of fact I'd recommend it, otherwise you can get issues with your monitor or GPU and it takes patience to wait each time for the monitor calibration.
Hardware these days might be more robust but at the end of the day it's all really delicate apparatus.
Edit: Just an update.
After uninstalling drivers with DDU and installing the most recent drivers I haven't had any issues with the game after playing for some hours. No black screen and no warnings or critical events in event view regarding the GPU.
I had some issues where a few times my screen would freeze with the picture frozen but the game running in the background. I installed newest drivers and didn't have any issues until it happened again when I replied to this post. I got a black screen soon afterward and decided to do the procedure and now it's been stable but I'll still have to play some more to be certain everything's really fine.
So far so good and for anyone interested, because I know some people have been having issues with the freezing of screen. If so, try it with DDU, like I did.
