Abandoned cave buildup issue

I know not to roll, I know to avoid the splashes but i am constantly getting rot build up even on land. From the grace at the entrance I run and jump and land on the small piece of land you can see from the edge but it doesn't matter I am getting rot build up just stand there on the dry spot. Whats the deal.

Did you by any chance roll while in water? That can cause you to get buildup even after you leave water

This. If your character looks soaked in the stuff, you'll get buildup for several seconds after hitting dry land.

Some of the land looks 'dry' but is not. I dealt with it by having a good supply of Boluses. There are also Talismans, Food, and Spells that help with it.

No I was not told anything. I was asked by 2 people if I rolled in it when the first thing I said was I know not to roll in it.
