"killing a bird" by shops? I will look it up.
But maybe you're looking for bigger payoffs. And surely you already know of this spot.
In Deeproot Depths, accessible after defeating Radhan in Caelid, there are stationary gargoyles on the big vines that give 3000~ runes each and there are 4 of them within close range, 5 if you have long range attacks. A site of grace is close by making for easier respawns.
In the Subteranean Shunning grounds, below the capital, the orges near the starting each give about 2000~ runes. There are about 5 close by a site of grace.
In Moghwyn's Palace, Albinaurics give 2000 for silver ones, and 4000 for red ones. There are cluster together so AOE attacks make quick work. In the same area, there is a bird across a chasm you can shoot with arrows. The bird AI is stupid and will run off the edge and die, giving you 12k runes. People will rest by the site of grace 2 ft from this chasm to respawn it. Its arguably the best rune per minute method out there.
Moghwin palace is takes the most effort to get there because you need to access a portl on the West side of the Consecrated Snowfields. You mentioned your level 97 so you may not know, this requires you to kill Commander Nial in Castly Sol, north of Mountaintop of Giants for one half of a elevator medallion and visiting the Alinauric Village in Liurnia for the other half.
If you have the Golden Scarab already, this helps substantially.
The other major one I know if is in Mogh's lands. You can get there by doing Varre's questline, or the old fashioned way from the Mountaintops of the Giants. The bird and albanaurics there give a large chunk of XP.
Get this Talisman. There should be a guide on how to get it on YouTube

Craft this item (or you can buy it from a merchant that sells it) and use it combined with the talisman when you get to the farm spot.

Go to this location here. If you haven't been here before, there's 2 ways to get here. The easiest way is by doing White Mask Varre's questline which you can find a guide on YouTube for, and by the end he will give you an item that will transport you to this area. (Not at the grace point I'm showing you by the way, you'll have to travel a distance in the area to get to that point I'm showing you)

Once you get to that grace point, equip that talisman, pop in that gold fowl foot, look past the cliff down and you'll see this bird. Aim and shoot him with a bow to aggro him. This will cause him to try and run to you, but will instead fall from the cliff side on it's end. Sometimes he doesn't fall, so you'll just have to rest at the grace site and try again.

When the bird is down, look to your right and you'll see the Albaneurics that you should have passed by to get to the grace site. This is where you can squeeze out the remaining rune acquisition in the area before you go back to the grace site and reset. I recommend using Radhan's Starscourge Greatsword for this part of the farm as it lures a good chunk of the enemies in when you get in the middle of the crowd and input the skill command a second time to smash the swords down, killing them instantly. There is another weapon you can use, but assuming you may not have beaten the game yet I won't spoil it any further than I already have at this point. I'll let you figure that part out yourself.

If my calculations are correct, Base rune farm without the buffs bank you 40k to 50k runes every 30s. With the Talisman and Fowl Foot in effect, you're looking at about 80K to 150K runes every 30s.
It's quite a bit of info I know, but I hope this helps. If you already knew a good portion of this, well then I'll just go fetal position in a corner somewhere because I spent most of this time uploading these screenshots to show you lmao. EITHER WAY GOOD LUCK AND HAPPY FARMING!!
100% this spot. Farming is about runes/minute as well as the danger of of dying and losing your haul. With the gold scarab this spot yields 17K runes/minute with killing 4 with almost no danger of dying except by falling. These enemies are totally helpless and right next to a save site.

There is a huge group of neutral crazy ladies near the village grace! They drop a amount of normal runes for what they are BUT.....They also drop rune consumables ( Golden Rune level 3) and a lot of gear you can sell for runes. Get some AOE then rinse and repeat.
Really only one place Mohgwyn Palace; kill the bird first and then use AOE to kill all of the Albinaurics on the way down the hill. Nets you around 70,000 runes or so. Run back up to the fire, rest, rinse, repeat. At lower levels maybe bring 999 arrows and just kill the one bird, rest, kill the bird, rest kill the bird...etc. About 11,000 runes per kill definitely more than one kill per minute. Shoot the bird in the eye with one arrow and it's dumb azz will run off the cliff and die. Don't run away too fast to the grace to rest as the bird might not run off the cliff. Just wait for it to kill itself then rest.
It gets faster if you use something like Sacred Relic Sword after beating the base game, because you want to grind for NG+ you can wipe out every Albinauric in two hits using the weapon art. (giant holy wave damage)
I have been playing Souls games since Daemon Souls, and I have had to kill undead fetuses clawing at me.
All that being said, nothing free me out more than the crazy dancing ladies...
