What controller should I use?
I don't like playing Souls games with keyboard and mouse admittedly

All the controllers have button mapping relative to the layout. It's whatever console controller your more familiar with and what controller is compatible with steam. If you're mainly a Playstation gamer, use a PS controller. Same in the case of Nintendo or Xbox.

If your console ambidextrous, like me, it choose the controller with the cooler designs available. These tend to use Xbox layout. For me, I have a nice Yae Miko themed controller from Genshin.
Im extremly happy with my trusty Xbox controller! And this is coming from someone who had Playstations since forever.

The game doesn't show playstation controls without mods, so xbox is probably your best bet.

Can't be more expensive than an Xbox itself
Get an Xbox or Xbox-like (3rd party) controller. All modern PC games with controller glyphs have Xbox glyphs, but many lack Playstation and Nintendo glyphs. It's annoying to buy a Playstation controller and then only have Xbox glyphs in many games.

Specifically a modern Xbox controller?
Xbox controller so you can use your right thumb to operate the d-pad.

I never specified that. The primary takeaway from my post is matching glyphs.

Newer Xbox controllers are preferred in most cases. 1st party controllers are generally preferred over the 3rd party controllers. 3rd party controllers are generally priced better than the 1st party controllers but also tend to be lower quality.

Google "Xbox controllers" and "Xbox controller alternatives" so you can look at prices and feedback.

Yes. They're expensive but worth it.
