HDR Implementation Windows 11
I had great success with the HDR in windows 10. Everything looked epic.
I bought a better cpu and switched to windows 11, all grey garbage. Same gpu, same screen... Any others have any luck solving this?

It's an nVidia display driver bug that only happens with certain games, namely ones that let you activate HDR in the game without it being activated in Windows. The RE engine games also suffer from it, basically HDR is "activated", you will see your display switch to HDR mode, but the game doesn't load the correct colorspace so everything is a dull washed out grey. If you launch a game that isn't affected (ones that require HDR to be on in Windows before even launching the game) you will find that the HDR still works perfectly.
The only fix I've found is to restart your PC, and then the HDR will work again for an undisclosed amount of time until it randomly breaks again.

I get the same thing on AMD, HDR is just buggy as all hell in windows.

Auto-HDR in 11 is especially a joke because it just turns HDR on all the time to wash out all SDR content.

It works fine in Windows. HDR is literally just some extra metadata sent over the wire. And this is why you need an actual, high quality HDR certified cable. Autohdr also works but is not ideal because if there is HDR and SDR content on screen, something is gonna look bad. And a majority of content especially online is SDR. Recording a game in HDR will make the recording look like ♥♥♥♥ on SDR displays as well and vice versa. This is also why if a game like Elden Ring is in fullscreen with HDR, visible overlays will screw it up unless windows has HDR on as well.

On top of that there are a load of formats that loosely adhere to several standards, it's a total gongshow. Hdr10 is the one that is most compatible but there's a bunch of others like Dolby vision.
Recording in HDR is going to make the recording look like ♥♥♥♥ even on an HDR display because the playback isn't HDR.

As for auto-HDR, it keeps HDR on with no HDR content whatsoever on the screen, so it is indeed ♥♥♥♥.

HDR10 in and of itself won't do you any good either, HDR400 is a subset of HDR10 but doesn't look good.

What looks good on my rig:
Windows display settings - Use HDR: On and Auto HDR: Off
Game Graphics settings - Fullscreen and 2560x1440 (native screen resolution)
Game Sound and Display settings - HDR: On and
Adjust Image Quality: Adjust Brightness: 4, Maximum Brightness: 2000, Adjust Saturation: 5

rebooting does work if this happens.

an alternate thing to try is disabling scaling in the "adjust desktop size and position" menu in nvidia control panel. if that works, you can go back into the control panel and re-enable scaling (if you need it) and it should continue to work

Ahhh, like clockwork, here come the armchair experts claiming this bug doesn't exist and it must be the user's display or something, yet they will never explain how HDR can be working just fine in the affected games for a couple of launches and then mysteriously break for no reason until a restart, while unaffected games HDR still works perfectly all the time.

I can't. My 20 TBs of Ranni Futanari vids are still downloading.

Elden Ring has been pretty weird with HDR for me - it'll work consistently for days and then randomly go grey screen upon booting up and the only way to fix it is to restart my PC. There was also a time where a driver broke the HDR and didn't get corrected until the next update.

I haven't found a fix for when it goes grey other than restarting my PC.

I have never gotten anything but a washed out grey mess with HDR in this game, and it's the only game I have this issue with. I only bought it a couple months ago, so maybe there was a previous version that worked properly? I Have tried setting HDR and autoHDR on/off in windows, windowed/fullscreen setttings, scaling settings in NVCP, disabling overlays, rebooting, nothing works. Very disappointing.

This only happens to me when something in windows pops up, like defender update etc.

This really worked to me, thank you!
