Hi there, trying to get back into elden ring but the game is constantly dropping frames. Is this normal now? I haven't played since the shadow of the erdtree update and before that the game ran buttery smooth but now its a complete mess... can anyone help me out?

nvidia is like new iphone version for extra $ :steamfacepalm:
Try turning off ray tracing if it is enabled
Hard to tell just from that, but I can asure you that these frame drops are more likely to problems inside Windows or drivers.

I can tell from 2 installations Windows and Linux that it runs perfectly stable on 40 Series cards in 2K.

So as a first step try to update your drivers or use NVCleanstal to make a unbloated clean NV driver installation. Also the new AI-Tool from NV is known to cause issues on many games like this.

try, first select win + r then type prefetch and delete and then %temp% and then temp and then in last type recent.
You bought a card from Nvidia's historical 2nd worst generation. At least it didn't catch on fire (yet). You reinstall you old card and RMA this crap.

Honestly the game just has performance issues. Ray tracing will cause stutters, even playing online sometimes does.

Why do you blame the game and not Nvidia?
As @Darksidewalker said, it runs perfectly on 4000 and I can confirm that this is the same case with AMD 6000 too.
Maybe Nvidia should make better products or drivers.
4k most setting max(no bloom ect), no dlss/dlaa, just native 4k, runs smoot on a 4070 super
i don't notice any drops anywhere

Im going to save you a lot of trouble. It's not your card, its not your PC. The game just has issues and you are always going to get stutters and performance drops.
my game runs quite a bit better after disabling the games ability to use core #0 of my cpu. (like it would previously drop to like 20fps when in range of the metal fire giant dudes in the dlc, now its smooth 60 near them just like the rest of the game) I've heard this could be risky though, your decision to try.
