Use light source and explore a bit and you can return to the exit.
You can also summon someone to bonk these clowns.
I don't know how to summon someone to help me.
I see videos where people spawn "friends" that at least distract bosses, but I have no clue about how to do that.
Can you point me in the right direction?
Using the Furlcalling Finger Remedy item, you can reveal summon signs on the ground placed by other players. Interacting with these signs enables cooperative play. You can find a majority of these signs near the little white cross looking statues, the Effigy of the Martyr, also known as Summoning Pools.
The major thing is you need to have Furlcalling Finger Remedies to see these signs. Then you can ask people to place signs nearby if you ask for help on the forums. Usually a person will ask you to set a password and give them the code, you can do this in the Multiplayer Menu in the start menu.
(Or return here later when you've visited the windmill village up in the far north, the Celebrant's Skull found there is the lowest-stat-requirement greathammer and also looks very mage-y, at least if you're leaning towards a necromancer/dark sorcerer look)
