You learn this the hard way when windows has an update and suddenly you can not work anymore and earn money.
He has an AMD processor, so that sort of rules out that issue for him.
The first thing I would attempt is verifying your files.
Someone above stated that your save file may be corrupted. Try creating a new character and play the game to see if it still crashes. If it doesn't, that means your save file maybe corrupted. I find it hard to believe because your game would still boot, but you would not be able to access your save file. I know, I've gone through that pain and lost all my characters. Make sure you remove and save your your save file from your %appdata% folder before attempting this because ER will see the file and still crash if it is corrupted.

Here are the 2 varieties of crashes I had (unique exception-code & offset combination; process id and start time obviously varied). I may have 2 types because the crashes were triggered 2 ways: 1) just loading from a save (mitigated with super-low quality settings), the game would exit automatically; and 2) "randomly"? while playing---I think when a new model got loaded, e.g, the Manse in the Abyssal Woods---then I would have to Alt+F4 or Alt+Tab to get out.
3x (this when crashing on load-in)
3x (a "random" crash)
And here's the contents of that crash file:
