Sorcery seems boring.
I started a mage game and got pretty powerful with the right gear and spells, including the comet azur and no fp tear one but I have to say, it seems pretty boring compared to melee builds whether it's strength or strength/faith hybrids.

Even without using "OP" and very situational spells like comet azur, sorcery seems pretty lackluster. For those of you who like going for mage builds, why do you find sorcery interesting?

I tried going pure mage, but like you I also found it boring

After two play throughs of nearly pure melee, going mage and basically not having to dodge anything was boring

My favorite build by far is a hybrid, you have range when you need it against annoying enemies, yet you arent worthless in melee

Speaking of the Moonblade, which is my favorite melee spell, how is it post patch? Did they nerf it or are the changes a net positive?

Haven't tried it yet, sry.
Try to glean some info from the "moonblade nerf oh no" thread, hehe ;)

I think everyone here agrees: if you're simply casting nothing but range spells and nuking bosses with Comet Azure, then yes, it's boring. Until you suddenly find yourself frantically juggling flasks in certain situations, then it gets not boring fast
I also used carian slicer a lot and yes it can be ok for a bit but then I thought to myself, why all the extra steps and fp cost when I can just use a bloodhound's fang upgraded to 10 and do much more dmg with less level investment?
That's a whole different efficiency topic, not your original point.

The damage is nerfed but the casting is faster. Just as described by the patch note.
As moonblade is my go-to for mob clearing, the damage nerf is definitely noticeable. It's not bad but still useable at least.

I actually find pure sorc mage the most fun thing to play and i made 6 different characters my second favorite is faith and then just some melee hybrid builds

My original post was why I don't enjoy sorcery and asking people who do enjoy it, why they do. So when someone says to me use "melee" sorceries like carian slicer I say that I did and I found the experience the same with any melee/faith build but with extra steps and fp costs, so why not just cut out the middle man (sorcery staffs and magic) and use melee weapons if your sorcery game is like this?

I dunno how it can be boring when it enables you to do so many things that just arent possible with a pure melee build.
Idk, just casting various damage spells from afar makes it safer than a melee build.
Depends on sorcery playstyle. While most spells are lackluster when it comes to usage, I choose the most intriguing ones like...Adzula Moonblade, Ranni's Dark Moon, Loretta's Greatbow. It caters to a lot of playstyle and it goes more towards risk vs reward without steamrolling bosses too easily and its kind of stylish, satisfying to use and flashy.
I paired it up with incants and a random melee to mix things up.

Running a pure sorcery melee build however is definitely a major challenge than purely running melee. I didn't enjoy pure melee sorcery, pure range sorcery and standard sorcery. I go for sorceries that just looks good to use.

The thing is kinda that... if you ask yourself this - "why should I bother", then we cannot really help you :) I tried to lay out why I liked playing a caster. Just play melee then. All good :)

That's kind of like melee weapons, though, isn't it? I used the Bloodhound Fang for almost the entire game on my first run. All the other weapons, and spells, just represent variety to me, not necessarily a "better" option.

Weapons require much more investment in leveling. And while many swords CAN remain viable into late game, you're at a serious handicap vs using later game weapons, which again require materials investment. Early game spells remain far more viable vs late game spells with no extra investment. I can't say how it plays with patch 1.04 now because there have been huge rebalances, but seeing as there are direct progressional replacements in spells, something obtained early/mid game that's costs half the FP should not be doing close to the same cast speed & damage as the variety of late game spells. If you had to sink rare materials into a limited set of spells it would be comparable & make sense.
What spells that you can get in the "early" game are actually more useful to you than mid-late game spells? The only one I can think of is MAYBE Rock Sling, but that's only "early" if you start out knowing where it's located.

I did a full run, I don't like it.
I used cold katanas the first quarter of the game.
I had to deal with Malenia and Maliketh as close range with Adulas GS.
And I only used 4 or 5 ranged spells for everything else.

Clearly boring compared to melee versality. Only interesting for academic/scientific purposes.

No, You're original point is that sorcery was "boring." Discussing the virtues of straight melee vs the flexibility of a melee Mage is a whole different tangent.

How many weapons on one melee build does the average player use from start to finish, given top-shelf upgrade scarcity? I'm guessing 2-3. If we're talking purely variety on any given run through I'll take a sorcerer hybrid any day of the week.

I use about 7 or 8

Don't tell me that I created the thread just to say "sorcery boring". My original post asks people what they do differently than me to find sorcery interesting, one of the points was use "melee" spells like the carian slicer so I gave my perspective on it. Now if we go on a tangent from that point on it's ok, that's how conversations develop most of the time, you don't need to shut it down with claims like "you just wanted to say you find it boring" when I myself tell you otherwise.
