I feel like once you get enough fp and upgrade your staff of choice there's little challenge compared to an upclose melee build.
Friend, there is a f***ton of spells that have their use in different situations to be found throughout the game. Do you want us to list them all now? If you just go thru throwing pebbles and are not really interested in the variety, then the real issues here seem to be that magic spells don't do it for you, and that the pebble is still viable late in the game. Even tho some would prefer ice pebbles or semi-invisible pebbles I guess. And that you want to beat up mobs with a piece of iron close up and personally. Then - do that :)
My endgame roster included the ice pebble, moonblade, the cannon (ae fireball), terra magica, Ranni's moon, Loretta's bow (super for sniping when clearing a zone) and also the Azur comet. I've seen folks here using mostly different stuff, too.
I tried most spells, including the carian slicer and greatsword ones, but those seem like melee builds with extra steps and fp requirements to me, so yeah for a mage run I chose to mainly use spells that don't require me to get close to an enemy and I found the playstyle lacking compared to strength/faith hybrid builds.
