1080/60 on i5 8400?
Does this game really need an 8 core processor?

Who has the game running at 60fps at 1080P on an i5 8400 and what graphics card are you using?

most of all you need a fast CPU with a fast RAM the GPU is not the limitating device, it will run with a 1080 ti or a AMD RX580 (8GB are the better ones) a better GPU does not change much if your RAM and CPU limits the bandwidth that can processed.

a i5 8400 limits the RAM speed to 2666 so you will have some FPS drops here and there maybe also up to stable 55 FPS max.

RAM bandwidth matters the most this CPU supports up to 41,6 GB/s what is at the lower end this game needs, peak values at this game goes up to 56 GB/s, most ppl with above this bandwidth have mostly no problems.

you don't need 8 cores for elden ring, and that CPU is great.

as far he has the right RAM.
you got enough to run the game. your stuff is not super old to worry and elden ring is not cyberpunk. for 1080p u r good. the game ran on my surface pro 4 which is a very old tablet (though on lowest resolution at 15 to 20fps)

what ram do you think that CPU supports.. any ram will run the game.

I have 16 gb of 2400 mhz RAM. By the time I buy this game, I may upgrade to 32 GB of 2666 Mhz RAM.

DDR4 2400Mhz RAM is no longer available in India so I need to get new 2666 MHz RAM from Crucial Ballistix.

you dont need 2666.. 2400 is fine, its not the best.. but it will work and give you a decent gaming experience

No you don't need 8 cores. What you do need is a CPU with high single thread performance because the game puts a lot of the load on just 2 to 3 threads. I have an i7-11700K which has a single thread performance of 3430 Million Operations per second and I have no issues with the game. The i5-8400 has a single thread performance of 2403 Million Operations per second. That's where the bottleneck is happening. If the game engine was capable of using all cores and threads equally then the 8400's six cores and six threads would be plenty to run the game well, but the engine doesn't do that. So that's on Fromsoft. Other games I have do use all the cores and threads more or less equally so the problem is in the Elden Ring game engine.

do you know what this two threads do ? they manage the memory transfer, the only things that limits the performance is the RAM bandwidth and the amount of used PCI-Express lanes. i know a guy with a 12700K and the game did not run well the cause was his overall usage of PCI-Express lanes, he reduced them to the minimum he need to play this game and all stutters and FPS drops are gone.

Im running GTX1060 6gb, i5 8400 and 16gb ddr4 3200mhz RAM (which got speed limit to 2666 by the CPU i guess). And I cant get the game to run 1080p high 60fps. I can get it to run 1080p high 55-58fps consistently though

what's your cup utilization during gameplay ?

Cup utilization is definitely high 90%. This game makes me all thirsty especially for Lady Bluberry Ranni. Had to drink a lot of water to quench my thirst.
CPU utilization is 70-80% and GPU utilization is 99% with RAM usage around the 7gb mark. At least according to RivaTuner.
