There are several good spots and some are accessable very early and some kinda late.

The earliest spot is Farum Gatebridge.
you can be there ~10 Minutes into the game, dont need to fight anything and you need 0 equipment.
being starting level and a level 0 weapon is enough.

you kill 3 little dudes that are positioned in a triangle form each giving 1100 xp and then reset to waypoint
it gives ~ 160-180k XP per hour. And is probably the earliest and easiest to do.

you can also do the Ball rune farming on lennis rise waypoint which is next to it.
this gives a bit more runes but is a bit less consistent and gets annoying fast.

A much better spot is the Gargoyle Farm Spot in Fias Champion Bossfight Grace.
A gargoyle right next to the grace if you go down 2m the tree that has his back to you and so he dies with 2 hits and doesnt fight back and gives 3550xp
But for this you need to beat Radahn and Twin Gargoyles first to get access to the area...
so you need to be at least level 60 and +6 somber weapons allready.

However this gives insane xp for midgame
you can kill 4 Gargs a minute = 852K XP per hour.

Best spot is Moghs Palace
Depending on having AOE or not either killing the dudes or the bird is faster in XP/per hour.

There may be a way to get there fast with Varres Questline
but if you play normal this can only be reached after you allready beat 70% of the game,...
You have to beat Morgott and Commander Nial for that and reach Fire Giant.
if you dont do a questline.

For early game you can farm 2 birds from the rotview balcony grace in west caleid. It's been a while since I done that but I believe it's about 3k runes every minute. That's really decent for early game.

I used Rock sling but I guess bows will also work if you ain't a mage.

Early game, Varre quest -> Mohgwyn Palace -> bird farm
End game, kill the last boss -> craft the Relic Sword -> Mohgwyn Palace -> albinauric farm

Enjoy 40K to 60K runes every 20s.

Without beating the game first, go there (same place) and shot an arrow to the bird, wait for it to fall off the edge, gain 11K runes and repeat every 20s or so.

Most fun way to farm runes: Send out your summoning sign and play coop. That way, you actually play the game.

Fastest way to farm runes: Ask on the forum for someone to drop you a full stack of lord's runes.

IMHO all other farming methods amount to mindless chores.
