The best way to farm runes is in mohgwyns dynasty area. The Palace Approach Ledge grace. Shoot the birdie, rest, repeat.

try sleeping elder dragon greyoll glitch in front of fort faroth in caelid, it's not that hard to do the glitch, I was farming there until I reach lv 90+

I’m playing pure melee with a bow/crossbow handy to deal with stone fire pillars in dungeons. Shooting birds takes too long.

Instead,I romp through the sleeping … whatever they are … with my Ruins Greatsword +10. I can net 45K runes each time in less than 2 minutes. More if I eat a pickled fowl foot to buff rune gathering.

Right at the start: go to the caravan near Lake Agheel, kill the ogres for easy 2 x 1000 runes (they can't really fight back)

Progressing the guy named D's quest gives you access to a lategame area, if you can sneak into it without alerting a nearby boss there's enemies you can kill for 1000 runes each (they can oneshot you but they're easy to stunlock if you just don't get overwhelmed)

The bird / albinauric farm is the fastest way but impractical unless you have lategame gear (the bird is very inconsistent, and you need the weapon made from the final boss' soul to optimize the frog killing to perfection - and doing it the slow way also is dangerous without a high level weapon)

A crossbow works. I don't think you understand the context of what people are telling you. The giant crow kills itself. You shoot it once simply to aggro it and if you're standing in the correct spot (it's pretty forgiving) the bird will run off the edge of the cliff to its death and you get a fat stack of runes for the cost of a single arrow/crossbow bolt.
It's often referred to as the 'chicken farm'.

If you think shooting the bird takes too long, I don't think you understand how that farm works.

You take any bow, manually aim at the bird from right next to the grace, shoot it, it runs towards you and falls off the cliff to its death. 10k runes. Turn around, rest, repeat.

Killing the albinaurics is a little more engaging though, so I did normally do that.

There is nothing inconsistent about it. I think I've only seen it not die once, and that was because I shot at it from the lower edge of the cliff after killing the albinaurics. Whenever I've shot it from the grace, it has run off the edge without fail.

And you are way overthinking it if you think you need the final bosses weapon to 'optimise' it ><

The farm I've been using a lot is the area top right of Dragon-barrow, where you meet Death-root dog. Each Vulgar Militiaman is worth 1~k runes, even more if you get the golden scarab, like 1.3~k. You kill a total of 19(I think) militia guys in one go, so you get 19~K to 24.7~K(with gold scarab).

Yeah, you're right. The couple of times I've tried to aggro that bird, it just ran around looking annoyed and ready to kill something but it didn't fall off the cliff. I decided to just kill the weird albanurics instead - just takes a couple minutes per 45K of runes, no crossbow bolts required.

Admittedly, this is very much dependent on having a very powerful weapon with a strong AoE to take out multiples at once without getting them all aggro'd, risking death and taking a lot longer.

The birb only looks around if you don't actually hit it, cause it hears the bolt fall nearby/hit the tree. Soon as you hit it, it goes ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ berserk and kills itself down the cliff.

If you get the weapon, try using the sacred relic sword and abuse that AoW. It’s a beautiful thing to witness and I feel like it may shave some time off the grind
