To the East of the tree worshiper area there appears to be and area bridge and road through a green area that is not accessible. Likewise to the West there is a large area with what appears to be a bldg. Are these areas accessible?

No, DLC is an entire new map around "bigger than" the size of Limgrave + Caelid combined in terms of walkable area

If you're referring to the Tree Worshipers Passage or Tree Worship Sanctum sites of grace, the path to the area you speak of is in a room right before Commander Gaius (Shadow Keep Back Gate grace). You need to get the O Mother gesture from Bonny Village and perform the gesture in front of the statue in the room and a secret passage will open.

If you haven't fond Commander Gaius yet then you'll need to start at the Church District Entrance grace and work your way through the back of the Shadow Keep. You might want to look at a video that shows how to get to Gaius, it's easy to miss.

That's what I eventually did. Ended up finding the back gate of the castle. What a trip. The Shadow DLC has kept me busy.
