I think it was something to compensate the bloodhound step "nerf".

Everyone and their mothers used the step in like every Radagon/Malenia co-op i did. Hell even i had a Misericorde wih it.

So it got nerfed for everyone not having light weight but at the same time they improved roll to give characters with less armor mitigation a way to be more nimble.
Cant remember anyone whinning here after that patch and honestly it was a good change.
I was playing with light roll all the way before the BHS nerf . . .
I could be sure light roll was better than average roll . . . or maybe it was just in my mind?? :crashqmark:

That talisman......makes you a porcelain cat oh my god. Butchers your defense.

I guess every meter has a reason to be. A normal (not overstuffed) character has to decide to be nimble, medium mitigation with "normal" mobility or sacrifice the mobility and roll quality with extra mitigation from ultra heavy armor.

Makes sense.

Light roll was indeed better than medium roll, pre-buff. It's just better now. You're not crazy. I went half-naked against Malenia and it helped a little.

... Well, in that case I think I was also using the talisman . . .

May check how the talisman work now (that I am not using for quite a good long time).

Not really, look at the video i linked, you will see the same animation speed and same number of i-frames, it was a placebo effect

How about the roll distance? That's what I had always felt. Not necessarily speed.

The way I tested this was by rolling and seeing how far I made it. Kind of like an Olympic long jump in the sand thingy.

Nah, i was able to block the black gargoyle guarding Gurranq sanctum entrance like a champ. No shield talisman or buffs, so scrap whatever i said about shields being dismal.
Well used against big dumb hard hitting monsters they are amazing.

I find shields to be really strong for normal enemies but not bosses. Unless you make significant investments.

1H + shield is not stronger than dual-wielding.

Why play magic or something else? Because it's fun, and because it's OK to not play the strongest thing. Not that shields are the strongest thing.

Yeah i saw the magic of this game looks allot better than in ds3.
Dual wielding / power stancing also looked cool but semed weaker than using something like the anchor with wild swing dealing 400dps before godrick.

I was a heavy armor + heavy shield and 1H weapon . . on my first run at DS3 that was my first souls game until I got to Abyss Watchers, then I was stuck behind Abyss Watchers until 40h into my first run, to where I decided, in an act of "stupidity" (that I considered stupid at the time) to go fully naked and no shield as I was being killed over and over there, started farming and nothing was helping me . . . and there it clicked for me, if I dodge everything, I dont need armor, I dont need shield, I dont even need to fear the boss or overlevel.

From there on the game went from "almost impossible" to "not hard, and Pontiff was 1st try, some 5min fight, I used 4 estus (and my first runs are blind and always solo).

DS3 was my first soulslike and i was more rolling than blocking. But what sold me there was the Perseverance and Nano Machi- i mean Iron Flesh. That was just the cooler shield.

99 END + talismans, go naked or almost naked and carry your fingerprint shield + colossal weapon with light roll :D
That was me when i used the shield with the anchor. Just love the guard counter.
I really l lvled up VIG beyond 35 because of Malenia (that on my first run I was around lvl 160 when I first done Malenia), but END was more like . . . I was already at NG+, was already getting +1 level for doing barely anything, I decided to just roll with it, farm more with golden wave and get 99 END to light roll through everything with more armor, holding the char there for DLC release, also another char at around lvl 170 with everything done (for the same reason but lower lvl, and I gone beyond lvl 100~110 because o Malenia again) and I am holding a char at lvl 70 before burning the tree and bringing ashes/sand to the capital because I noticed my chars that are beyond this point could not help with Margitt and Godfrey Spirit there even with password, the moment I got there with my lvl 70 char (that by luck I was at the first grace, so I just ran past everything and got there in just some minutes) I could be summoned and help.

Maybe I get another char to lvl 70 then move this one up to endgame and Malenia (because I wanted to fight her at this lvl), but without a char stuck behind the events that change the Capital I can not help with the capital bosses. (tho I may be wrong and it was a glitch, both my chars that are at "beyond the capital of ash" could not be summoned there, so if I am wrong and it was just a glitch, I would like to know).

Brass shield is love, Brass shield is life.

Using a shield + high poise is a super OP technique especially when fighting champions.

This. They're good against weak enemies, but those aren't much trouble anyway. Bigger/stronger ones can usually drain your stamina/break your poise in 3 hits, then just spam attack you to death. This has been a design problem since DS2, when they nerfed shield mechanics as a response to people finding them too effective in DS1.

It’s true that bosses drain lots of stamina when blocking and roll is often a better option but that doesn’t make shields useless. Especially fingerprint shield.

By using shield you suddenly don’t lose ability to roll. You just gain additional defensive option.

Some attacks are simply very hard to dodge and blocking is just easier.
If our build is focused on weapon skill or spells then why not add shield to that? There is almost no downside to that if we have enough stats. Shields make many boss fights soooo much easier.

The best reason to not use a shield is to hold two weapons. Other than that just use a shield.

95 poise+Fingerprint+ Iron jar+ HP regen = Undying.

Tell me your opinions about shields please (LOL).
lazymagpie Nov 12, 2022 @ 5:03am
Maybe if you fully commit to a greatshield build? Medium shields certainly ain't, because about halfway into the game, a lot of enemies start chewing through your stamina bar like it's nothing, no matter how high you leveled it. Greatshields are far better, but have (in my oppinion) absurd stat requirements and weigh too much, leaving you with either no room for decent armor or limited weapon selection. Small shields are good for parrying, period.
