The co-op mod is the absolute best thing to happen to this game.
I hope people make them for the older games too. I could not believe you can actually have a real co-op mode, start to finish, smooth, and with even less jank than the regular online.

I've played these games tons, and the pvp is just bad. Duels are a joke with how awful the netcode is, it's not a real game. And invasions' charm wore off very quickly after Dark Souls 1. It was a neat idea, I think they could still do pvp if they actually tried but they really haven't. I genuinely cannot understand anyone that actually gets into it that has already played the rest of the games.

I was playing this game with my wife (don't be fooled by my steam playtime) co-oping right at the absolute beginning, and we were consistently invaded and insta killed in one hit. I've played a lot of these games and my skill level simply does not matter, the twinking is Dark Souls 1 levels and it's completely broken. I think the more disturbing element is just how pathological the impulse is to twink and insta kill people. I've seen multiple people use """accessibility""" as an excuse for why they need overpowered weapons to insta kill people at the start of the game. Their in game behavior is really weird, they play with an intense fervor, like someone has a gun to their family and they need to get 25 player kills in 30 minutes.

I remember invading in Dark Souls 1 when it came out and without thinking about it just got a +10 lightning weapon and invaded in the Burg. I killed a few guys in a single hit and was like... huh this is really dumb. So I started doing gimmick joke invasions and that was fun for a bit but now it's really old hat. I feel like on PC there was a general kind of ... maybe not etiquette but at least player goals that was more about fun and doing an invasion as a way to spice up a player's journey. Playing Elden Ring it was pathological I can't think of another term, almost like an addiction, I only ever got invaded by one guy that didn't have that insatiable nerd bloodlust. Oh and PVP has always sucked and the games are not built for any serious competitive play in any way whatsoever.

Anyway, the reason this mod is awesome isn't even really about getting rid of the terrible invasions. It's just the online works better. It works like how it obviously should. In an ideal scenario, the game would have shipped like this and invasions would work within this and actually be balanced. But alas mods are needed to save the day.

Am only going to address what I read. If the game just uses the network to generate a lobby (and even ones that use Steam Matchmaking may work - it's been many moons since I used this). You should look into hamachi.

Basically - it lets you configure a local area network (LAN) between your wife and yourself, and then it would basically be like you are in a closed environment. Used this for some games like Age of Pirates when the servers died out.

The rest seems to be a sort of vent on Souls multiplayer - and tbh we got so many of those types of threads, I just can't bring myself to read about it again. Though - glad you are both having fun playing as you want; next will be finding neat mods to throw into the mix later like a randomizer if you ever decide on a second run :kodama:

This reminds me of watching a Legend of Zelda Wind Waker randomizer stream, and the guy walks out of his house to be greeted with Phantom Ganandorf - didn't even have his sword yet lol.

The coop mod is great mainly because it enables multiplayer with mods. Even disregarding the fact that From's servers need a programmer that isn't an intern to look at them, using mods online normally gets people banned. This bars any sort of multiplayer when you want to play a modded version of Elden Ring, like the Randomizer mod mentioned above. Thanks to the seamless coop mod we can still play modded Elden Ring with friends.

Which you would think From would just get the hint. DS1 had that soft-lock server if i recall correctly that caught all the folks using DSFix. With that, you could use it and some other light visual replacers and be OK (my favorite being a simple re-namer for areas; Dickstab Forest and Anal Rodeo will live on forever in memory lol).

Though with every game having mods, they should just make a "bad player server" just so folks can mod and play online (or at least without jumping through hopes to avoid an accidental ban for their sweet ENB).

personally for me the QoL is what sold me on it, the song and dance of "go to location, summon friend, do boss, friend leaves, do it the other way, seperate and move to new location" just grows tiresome, but its 100% a nice bonus that you can mod and go nuts with randomizers and the like as well.

Quality of Life improvements are great and it's a shame that mods have to do all these improvements when they could have been in the game itself.

World of Warcraft's devs implemented many mod features into the core game. Bioware did the same with numerous NWN mods. Yet companies like Bethesda or Bandai seem to reject the basic improvements that players have made to their games. If it took a mod maker 15 minutes to do what you claimed couldn't be done, clearly you're either a liar or incompetent.

Good on you for an honest write up especially coming from a DS gamer.

pvp is the only reason dark souls 3 had an active playerbase for so long. Invasions in that game were amazing
