Who is an undead and who is not - lore
Hi guys,
I'm still early in the game (just finished Stormveil) and if I start looking at some YT video, I get spoiled too much.
So, can you give me some bits of lore, but not too much about what happened exactly for the population in Limgrave? Are all soldiers undead? What about the barbarians on horse? And which race are the servants in Stormveil, I mean the gatekeeper with the long neck? He is not an undead, but oh god, he has a skin problem.
And then we get some NPCs which appears to be normal human looking people, like the noble wanting me to free castle Haig. Or Roderika, etc. It seems as if they are oblivious that 99% of the people around them are basically walking undead.
So that's a bit strange. In the 'nonsensical' way of things. They should be aware that the land is quite cursed. Haig should definitively speak of what is happening, and not just speak of his castle being lost, but all the rest is ok, thanks!
I'll dare say I have hard time to suspend my disbelief. A setting can be super fantasy but still maintain an internal consistency, but here that's not the case.

Queen Marika removed the Rune of Death from the world, meaning that 'death' does not exist anymore as a concept. It's a bit iffy on how this exactly works, but that is the broad reason why enemies 'respawn', as well as the player character.

EDIT: There are also actual undead which are linked to a 'death plague' that has infested the burial grounds of many catacombs and graveyards. This was caused by the first demi-god to die, Godwyn the Golden. You'll learn more about him if you explore Stormveil Castle's secrets.

Godwyn, (technically) Ranni, and any skelly you come across is undead. Everyone one else is either alive or a ghost.

So the low level militia soldier in Limgrave, the ones with the English-looking plate helmet, they have blue skin but are alive?
Seems like a curse to me!

In this world omen are cursed, but they aren't dead. Being cursed means being shunned by the erdtree / greater will, not being undead.

The way I always looked at it, is that even though they can't die they still age. A lot of the soldiers have been around since the Shattering War, so are probably hundreds of years old.

I have zero evidence of this but like I said, there isn't a lot of concrete information on the details.

♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥! I just realized something. Don't look OP, this really is a spoiler.

I mentioned in a thread sometime ago if you wanted to think of ER as a prequel, then the Godwyn ending would be canon for obvious reasons. But just now I realized Godwyn -> G--wyn -> Gwyn.

I keep hearing about these secrets in Stormveil. What (or how) do you learn more about Godwyn there?

Search everywhere. Here's a hint. There's a door near a grace that's probably still locked.

I think I should have said Ulcerated Tree Spirit (and dried squid) too. But I couldn't find any closed doors. I did find a Stonekey gate tho that I'd never used. But I had already cleared the area after it somehow.

Yeah that's the one. The weird little hill at the end on the far side of that boss room...

lol funny thing is, I found this early on, because I fell through an elevator shaft and saw that, and I'm like what the ♥♥♥♥ is this!!!! Luckily I saw it, cause it gave me a clue to keep exploring later on knowing that such an area existed.

But what does that have to do with Godwyn the Golden?
