Both possibilities can be true. I used to grind "genuine" twinks in Dark Souls 3 by beating the whole game with +2, +3, +4 weapons... It was insufferable at times, but it was always neat to find if i could actually beat this or that boss just with tools at hand.

Elden Ring though... The enemies are relatively cheap this time around and i'm dreading even attempting certain bosses with a weakened character.
Far more likely is that people use Honest Merchant or whatever the mod is called these days. Dark Souls 3 had one - you could buy ANYTHING from the shrine maiden for 1 soul. The ultimate character builder - no playthrough required, just install Wex Dust on top of it and invade anyone anywhere while standing in the Firelink Shrine. 999 siegabreaus is totally something the devs envisioned...
Probably the same thing is happening in this game too.

Oh, and of course - they could always just trade items from other players. Its legit, and the only thing they can't trade are upgrade materials.

I mean it's possible considering the amount of the players in the community but it certainly shouldn't be the majority of online players.

Most people are definitely trading across characters, or cheating. If you've been keeping up with the community, which I barely have, you should certainly know that people have ways of accessing infinite starlight shards and such. There is no way that if they can get these consumables like crazy, that they aren't receiving these weapons the same way.

You do realize you can simply turn off online play, right? RIGHT? Never once been invaded by a "twink" because I don't group up at low levels.
