I don't get the Messmer hype

I personally found it to be a well designed fight, but otherwise just mid overall.

I honestly just don't understand the hype around him.

I mean sure, he's one of the few DLC bosses that has a non-bullsh*t moveset, but other than that, what exactly puts him above everything else, for some people to rank him as their favorite DLC boss?

For me he's quite literally at the bottom of the main DLC boss list, and even some side bosses (like the death knights) rank higher than him xD

EDIT: Also I feel like I have to mention: I didn't watch ANY of the promotional material for the DLC before playing it, only after finishing it did I catch glimpses of it, and I saw that Messmer featured heavily in the promotional material, so it's possible that people just bit into the insane hype generation of these trailers?

Once you get the dance it's a really smooth fight. He also has huge punish windows so we can do our fully Charged R2's or Jump R2's and get the stagger and critical

Nothin felt cheap and cinematically he's the coolest

Also he wasn't that hard, I think I beat him in my third or fourth try. As I said he has a manageable moveset (not BS like radhan or rellana).

Messmer is fine gameplay-wise, his moves are hard to dodge but not too hard, his openings are there, he telegraphs pretty much every attack and has surprisingly few AoE moves. He has summons if you struggle, he has obvious weaknesses and no gimmicks. He is fun to fight. What I do not like is his looks. Like seriously, dude looks plastic and weird, especially his snakes. His armor is ugly too. But that is my opinion, otherwise a great boss. One of my favorite from the DLC along with Midra and BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYLEEEEEEE

it really depends on how many scooby dooby frags you've used as it's extremely easy to just be overpowered before you reach him.

he means filter as in filters bad players or habits for example rolling backwards from his slashes will get you caught by a lingering flame but rolling forward won't and rolling through attacks is usually the better option for being able to punish alas Messmer punishes bad habits

it filters people out who need to get good because they ♥♥♥♥♥ out.

at 6 skidoos he took me a while to kill solo but it felt great to do it. this is my first soulslike and i only just completed the base game like a week ago.

Apart from being a well rounded fight, he's also a cool character - if you care for that thing.

A big part why the area is so ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up, why things are what they are, the style of his keep, his servants, friends and minions and his own personal tragedy and vileness all ties very neatly together.
He has a cool cutscene, a spectacle in the second phase you can still kinda follow.

So, for me at least, he's not just a well thought out encounter but everything complementing the fight makes Messmer, the character, more compelling than a lot of other bosses that may or may not be mechanically more challenging or complex (though that's different for everyone in these games anyway)

His voice are awesome and unreal at same time. it's a refreshing feeling after keep hearing "I malenia, blade of miquella" thousand times.

Well the chestplate you get from him is immaculate in terms of raw drip for one.

I see, thanks for your input everybody, I think I now understand why you all love him so much.

For me personally, the best DLC boss is Midra, and second to him it's Romina.
Also for me Rellana is literally the worst dlc boss, with some random side bosses following her, and then it's radhan, with a few other random bosses, and then Messmer :D
