It is THE massive damage spell but only for low level, you gotta let the rot do it's work.

Its still massive damage even in the DLC. Its used to apply rot, not to make big numbers when you hit them. Rot ticks damage like poison but at a much higher rate. You use it on tanky things and bosses, not normal enemies that die fast.

im gonna try it on a lion i particularly hate...see how it works

It is supposed to proc rot when fullly charged (and some enemies/bosses require you to cast it fully charged 2 or 3 times to proc rot).
If you want to proc rot fast and with 1 cast use Scarlet Aeonia, it is "less safe" but "can proc rot with 1 cast only" also deals much more damage from the explosion (sometimes the Aeonia explosion deal enough for half a rot dragon breath dmg/s)

thanx for advice all...im gonna experiment

Rotten breath and Ekzykes decay rot build up got nerfed ages ago. Now the best option to properly rot someone is going full Malenia

https://eldenring.wiki.fextralife.com/Scarlet+Aeonia

It got a lot of buffs and even some decent hyper armor (can take a Godfrey axe into the face without interruptions) also one or two casts are enough to rot a boss for good. The other alternative are the hefty rot pots wich are perfectly farmable.

Sure, you can do fast cast to try to proc but you will like have to "fast cast" it some 6 or 8 times to proc and the FP coost will be immense for little return.

How effective is Scarlet Aeonia at the DLC?
Here is me doing some practice with it (it was my second day of attempts, probably some 1h of practice before that video, stil check how much damage it deals and how fast it procs if you do a full explosion+charge at bosses and enemies): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Sgy8UOnzs8
It explodes dealling damage then is around 100dmg/s for some 90s (so... 9K dmg)

Rotten breath doesn't do alot of rot buildup compared to resitances of some bosses, some are outright immune, scarlet aeonia is the best for rot buildup, it can do 650 buildup if all of it hits, which will proc rot on almost anything, guaranteed on anything that isnt immune to it within 2 casts, plus rot does damge over time relative to the targets HP, just have to let it tick down.

It can explode for some 2K dmg on explosion + some 100dmg/s or more, but yes, on "health%" I guess so better against tankier targets.
I think 100dmg/s on a 25K target is 0.4%dmg/s, being 36%HP of the target for each proc of Scarlet Aeonia.

Rotten Breath still has the benefits of ridiculously low requirements and being available like in first 30 minutes of gameplay or even earlier if you kill Agheel fast. It is an invaluable tool for low-level runs. In PvP it is arguably better than Aeonia because it is harder to dodge or run away from, and it rots just fine. Aeonia is good for what it does but it requires 36 fth and beating friggin Malenia

I was going to say the same thing, Scarlet Aeonia is great for rot buildup, mostly if you have a phantom out or something though, the wind up takes a little too long if alone.

Pffft i stopped being a low level character two days after Elden Ring relase! But yes all you have to do is to kill Ekzykes in Caelid (fire obliterates him) and if you dont want to face two pissed off banished knights sneak into the Dragon Communion church (the Caelid one, not sure if Limgrave church grants all the incantations). I had high RL characters in mind before suggesting the flower!

Oh also remember your mimic can contribute to build up rot with any incantation or consumables you have equiped.
