IMHO loosing runes permanently upon death makes game boring and grindy and punishes exploration.
I think it is very bad game design to make loosing your runes permanently upon death.
That makes the game boring grind, same enemies, same locations... going around and exploration is punished by loosing runes, and you can not develop your character - and have to grind, and it makes game boring. Parry mechanics is just ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up, as it is linked it is framerate a lot, thus sometimes it works and sometimes it does not - so playing with heavy knight where roll is usually not an option makes fight not so tactical as it can be... at least blocking works for most of the time.... To be honest this game is shooting in its leg by some stupid and unreliable mechanics.

that you fail to see that loseing souls on death is your own fault. Its been in every soulslike game since 2009.
its a loughable take, that you think a CORE mechanic is stupid.

if you want to change it download a mod I am sure its out there somewere.

the beauty of pc gaming is you can mod the game however you want (offline).

personally I want permadeath but I also want there to be no unfair deaths. Like sure if I went into a boss underprepared I would be fine with that character dying. However if I get caught on a wall and that triggers a jump animation that doesnt end until it instakills my character which happens constantly when I search for invisible walls or attempt what looks like a viable jump that is not ok. Especially in Volcano manor.

Mod is on nexus, works nicely and really fixed the game for me. If core mechanics is dumb - it is dumb anyway and look like they do not want to learn here if they use same mechanics that I consider foul again and again. And it is not a core mechanics, it is just stupid attempt to make progression slow and illusion of how hard the game is and attempt to balance problematic design and eat time of the gamers without providing meaningful joy.

People aren't really arguing any counter points other than putting down the OP. I disagree as well but it's good to offer some objective counter factual examples. Having runes be on the line creates a tension for almost everyone to some degree; even people here saying "they don't matter." They do. It's part of the same feelings with close boss fights and the same neurotransmitters are at play. I don't like losing them because of how it felt in early game and I use the rune loss prevention tear during a lot of open world play when I am holding a lot of runes.

So while I understand how some people may not like it, the majority of people actually do like it just by their brain activity as it heightens the experience. I think when people view it in that regard, even those who don't enjoy being able to lose them can still appreciate the atmosphere it creates using a different perspective.

If I was a bajillionaire, I wouldn't care about losing some pennies every now and then.

That's how I feel about runes and souls in these games.

At a point, that sense of tension is entirely mute because you start being good at the game.

It creates boredom and chores atmosphere as you have to grind again... nothing is added, it does not even frustrate me, it makes me feel boredom and that I just lost time without any result that is all - is it good design... well I think it is not. Existence of the mod that fixes it - points out that I'm not alone and there are people who understand the problem - others - they eat what they receive....do not want to change and are afraid of changes...

You do not have to grind in Elden Ring, lol. If you want to play an entirely different version of the game, kudos, but it's a bastardized version.

You can also use sacrificial twig if you're sitting on alot of runes just shy of a level.

If I'm about to enter a section where I am sure I will die (i.e boss) and I have some left over runes I will go invest them in crafting materials such as smithing stone.

It's not that the mechanic is bad, you just seemingly haven't played the previous titles and this is a mechanic you don't have much experience with so it feels unfair.

You don't lose runes on death. You lose runes by not returning to where you PREVIOUSLY died. Been that way since Demons Souls, chief.

the developers think so too, that's why they try their hardest to give you your runes back. if you die to certain bosses the first time you encounter them, your runes will be placed in front of the fog wall, so you don't even have to enter to get them back. and then there are the twigs you can use to get your runes from arenas if you can't beat a boss.

anyway, they know it's not a very good way of raising tension but they obviously don't know how to make a better system. don't go too hard on the poor dudes.
