Is there anything worth doing in the abyssal woods area?
So, I snuck past those annoying invincible "madheads" a couple of times to explore the area and I at least expected to find a cave or something but so far nothing. Is there anything worthwhile in that area round about those "madheads"? So far it was just that tree avatar boss which was right at the start of that area, then a few scadutree fragments but otherwise just a whole lot of nothing.

Anything else? I've only missed the avatar boss OP mentioned.

There's a naked guy with mad hand there.

You can kill the "madheads" and one of them drops a talisman (dmg boost when madness happens)

Very fun, very hard anti cheese boss.

It leads to a unique boss fight which is praised to be some of the top bosses in the dlc.
I thought it's empty first until way later into the game lolz

What I find a bit baffling is that there's seemingly barely anything worthwhile on the western side of the abyssal woods for which you have to get past those horribly annoying madheads. I expected something that would make it worth the effort of an enforced sneaking section.

There isn't much no
One of the better legacy dungeons is there, other than that an NPC for a weapon, cookbooks, talisman and Scadu
Might be missing something but not much

Okay, so, is that somehow triggered by a story event or sidequest or can you find it anytime just by exploring?

You can trigger anytime, but simply exploring would not do. It's a legacy dungeon located in the south part of the map.

Other than, Midra, a church with some crap and an invader, a cook book, a couple random consumables and a scadutree fragment, a talisman you can get from parrying the instant death enemies, that's about it.

Ah, seems I completely missed Midra's Manse.

Take in the atmosphere and do something a little bit different to the normal gameplay for a bit.
