Greatshields useless in PvP?
+19 Palisade shield which has 59 guard boost, Greatshield talisman, 25 endurance, and yet it seems every player can poise break me in a single hit. Colossal weapons I can maybe understand but even people running around with spears and greatswords hit me once and poise break me, then im forced to eat 2 hits before I can recover.

Am I better off just dropping the shield and finding something more meta for my offhand?

That's your problem. Stamina damage has been buffed tremendously in PvP since the game's release. It's still possible to make shield builds work, but you need to raise your max stamina and shoot for higher guard boost to avoid your current issue.

Okay, what do you mean by "poise break" in this circumstance.

Poise is a mechanic that only applies during your attacks, and only during SOME attacks. Poise is not active at all times.

When using a weapon art, like spinning slash, or some attacks from heavier weapons, your poise takes effect to make sure you can complete your attack without interruption. Poise has nothing to do with guarding or shields.

Do you mean they Guard break you? Or stance break? (There are a few names for this, like Guard crush). when you hold up your shield, and you take an incoming attack, if your stamina usage cannot cover the attack, you will enter a stagger state where you can be critically hit, or just can't block and take extra damage.

This is due to you not having enough stamina to cover blocking the attack.

Yes, sorry youre right, I get staggered when guarding with the shield, not poise broken. Would I be better off swapping to a shield with a higher guard boost? Or simply get more endurance? I was considering using the golden greatshield as it's guard boost is 70 and has 100% physical dmg reduction.

There are a few things you can do. You can swap to a different shield with better guard boost, but also keep in mind the guard VALUES you're looking for. Everyone loves 100% physical mitigation afterall.

Another thing you can do is put https://eldenring.wiki.fextralife.com/Ash+of+War:+Barricade+Shield as an art on your shield, it's STUPIDLY EFFECTIVE, and makes enemies BOUNCE off of you, rather than just tap your shield. It lasts a decent amount of time, and it costs relatively negligible FP.

Unless you specifically make an enormously big boy build with HUGE vig/end/str with fingerprint greatshield 25 + shield crash AoW + shield grease buff; yes I'd say they're pretty useless in PvP comparing to PvE.

25 is just low end cap, which means it's not your strong side but standard stats.
Not to mention how calculation of stamina damage in PvP works..
You could make poke rapier greatshield build, but that's not very efficient and requires you to be mobile anyway in PvP
Besides, greatshields weight a ton. You could use offhand for something else, a smaller shield that gives you buff and keep your main weapon 2handed.
In my opinion you'll have a lot of disadvantage trying to tank/block instead of dodging in PvP.
Try other greatshields at least. Like icon shield (small constant hp buff).
Or Golden Beast Crest Shield which I think is best well-rounded in my opinion when I was doing PvP with it.

56 guard boost is pretty low. You'll want a shield with like 80 or more
TheBlueFox Jul 16, 2024 @ 4:50pm
Barricade shield costs 10 FP, (Can be reduced with talismans), Gives your shield level 4 hardness (Greatshields are Tier 2 for perspective. Tier 4 is like hitting the leg of a walking mausoleum)
It also HALVES the stamina cost needed to block. And it's duration got boosted to 10 seconds

I was thinking of using barricade shield but Im currently running shield crash/charge, mainly so I can apply bleed with it. I think the bleed build up was 112. If I use barricade shield, I might as well use a different shield since I wont be able to proc bleed with palisade, unless I use the shield as a weapon :steammocking:

Do you meet the stat requirement for the shield? If not, you'll use more stamina when blocking. Also, 25 endurance isn't all that much. Shields aren't very good for blocking unless you go big on endurance. Most enemies will break you in one hit.

The two hand meta strikes again. Suffice to say that even at 82 guard, and 155 stamina it's still a problem because people can just r1 spam into you unless you have a guard poke.

Seems a bit low if you want to actually block stuff
30 minimum, and yeah you need a poke-y stick to apply pressure for opponents not to just smash against you wall for free

But that's boring and annoying so you do you

Seconded on using some form of poker, it dramatically reduces people's ability to pressure your guard since they don't just get a free pass to wail on it until you guard break. Heads up btw, people will try to pivot backstab you for it. Also, be mindful of status effect builds, which apply through blocks annoyingly enough. You can be bled through your shield despite taking 0 from every attack.
