Not sure about Crystal Barrage specifically, but remember that it's +25 holy damage before defenses (not damage negation). If an enemy has very high holy defense, then you can see as little as 2-3 extra holy damage.
Also, Last Rites is not a worse version of Golden Vow. It gives you and any nearby allies +100% damage versus undead (double damage, any type) along with the permanent kill buff towards them. It's pretty broken lol
Ahh, that's how defense works, 100 holy defense means it will absorb exactly 100 holy damage, right? Does it absorb before damage negation? Like "(100Def - 20dmg) / 1.2neg"?
You're half-right. Defenses are applied before damage negations. But they don't remove a flat amount of damage. Instead, defenses are compared against damage received (i.e. ratio) to determine how much damage is reduced before applying negations. If defenses are 8x greater than damage received, then the damage is reduced by 90%. If damage received is 8x lower than defenses, than the damage is reduced by only 10%. The tiers in between have formulas that are available with a quick Google search. But, think of defenses as protection from chip damage.
A good rule of thumb is: the lower the damage received, the greater the reduction of damage by defenses.
