(spoilers) Awesome game, awesome gameplay, cool cutscenes, complete lack of storytelling
I just finished the base game and the dlc today on PS5 and am probably going to pick it up for pc whenever it goes on sale so i can get in on modding it, but the game was great from start to finish. You know what would have made it better though? Having a story.

I get it, some people are into playing detective and figuring out what the story is but I don't have any interest in reading endless item descriptions and starting a spreadsheet to piece together what happened.. the story in this game is akin to dropping a dictionary in your lap and saying if you want to learn english go ahead. If you're like me and you didn't want to play detective, the story you experienced in elden ring goes something like this:

I resurrect or something into this world, immediately die, a one eyed waifu gives me a horse ring and lets me turn runes into levels, i kill a bunch of gods and their entire armies because they are hostile to me, waifu wants to burn a tree so im like ♥♥♥♥ it she’s cute let’s do it, she lights herself on fire and dies, dont stick your ♥♥♥♥ in crazy so that kinda worked out.. well i suppose i will just keep killing gods, now i’m a king with nobody left to serve me

That's just not good. Part of what makes a good story is how it is told.. leading you through an experience that is entertaining and which usually builds up to a huge crescendo with a big payoff. My payoff was that i sat in a chair with a voice-over for a few seconds and then that's it. As bad as that story experience is, i want to reiterate that the gameplay, exploration, level design, music, cutscenes, and of course the boss fights were more than enough to make me love the game and it might even be in my top 10 now.

I don't want your jesters or your points, and if it offends you that i hated one aspect of an awesome game then it's time to touch grass for a while, I'm just venting a bit i guess and wondering how many out there agree

It's hilarious how some apologists claim you're "not invested enough in the story" if you aren't combing every corner of the map for shiny tuffs of smoke which have no direct indication of story importance until you pick them up... instead of idk playing the game?

This kind of "storytelling" is not a charm. It's a remnant of technical shortcomings of older souls games that fromsoft never got rid of because they realized they could save money on not animating dialogue with how complacent their playerbase is.

nah if you want to know you can go looking for it. annoying, right? imagine if i had broken up that information into a thousand segments and put them on item descriptions found in obscure places and then expected you to piece it all together in order to have any understanding of this conversation.

that would suck.
i love the resolution to just troll after people pointed out you are causing your own issue with the game.

its very funny to say you go into an rpg not reading what is shown to you though, and expecting to know the story.

i don’t buy games to play wiki simulator

A lot of poetry and modern art could easily be considered fragmented and obscure. The surrealists had a penchant for making bizarre, incomprehensible artforms. Should those be written off in favor of more traditional and structured prose or classical aesthetics? The dictum of "less is more" aptly describes ER's approach to storytelling, which feels like a kaleidoscopic fever dream.

Much of Judeo-Christian canon is debated to this day, look at the Dead Sea Scrolls and other manuscripts scattered with different takes on eschatology, etc. Piecing together a "story" based on available data is hardly new.

Okay, we get it, you hate literacy and scene building. You're all hopping in other threads that have nothing to do with this and peeing in your mouth.

Could you just, like, shut up? At least about this?

game literally has a great story (part of it is even explained in the intro cutscene), another bait post

Y'all care too much about the story...it's the same as every other story in history...there's a million different sides to it. The only thing that matters is you have to kill Radagon so maybe you can suck on Melina's toes after...or if you swing the other way you can finger butt hole

no bait, you can leave if you want. just wanting to hear from others who agreed the storytelling in this game is trash

you also have many characters either in the hub area like gideon and the lady who gives you boss weapons, or who are traveling with you, like Melina. All of these characters tell you about how things are kinda ♥♥♥♥♥♥, god is missing, civil war is happening, and people aren't staying dead anymore. Gideon especially will just straight up tell you a significant portion of what's going on and why you're doing what you're doing in completely plain language and tells you what your next step should be most of the time. idk how you learned nothing when you're kinda forced to talk to him because the game doesn't have a quest log and you have to go to the hub world to get weapon upgrades and boss weapons.
Git gud at reading stuff

haha yeah pretty much. the npc questlines in this game seem really random how they’re progressed and are definitely easily missed but i’m kinda fine with that if that’s how they wanna do it.

my issue is really just the main story and how it is told, or rather not told at all and instead they just took the notes they made when creating the lore and scattered it in the most obscure places they could find. like i said in the original post it’s like putting a dictionary in your lap and saying ok fine learn english.

and then we get fanboys trying to defend the storytelling in this game when it doesn’t even exist. pretty funny in retrospect
