it'd be best going horizontal progression (e.g. guild wars, 1 ideally, where there are 100s of skills which can be thought akin to ashes of war and weapon swapping to form a hand or small collection of skills you take to play).
don't really think its possible, also personally wouldn't care for it very much.
i like mmos, but i dont go to souls-likes for them.
blade and soul combat was not poor.
black desert sorta had arpg'ish.
aion certainly had mass combat... world monster raids, whole faction invasions (portals to baddy zones would form). quests where you need to seize a gold orb from the middle of hostile player towns... all sorts.
guild wars had team arena, with 8 teams in some modes.
mass pvp in alterac valley is probably still a thing round stormwind alehouses.
blade desert is the same, but with hotkey combos to cast spells for extra damage, and lets not pretend the enemies were complex, they walked forward and died to your aoes, even the big bosses.
aions rifts are big stand and hit fest with simplistic combat, which is again, the point i am making,
do any of these have special hitboxes? Ie can i jump off the rifts boss ground attacks, or is it just a circular zone and hits everything in it reagrdless of their height? can you dodge under them? can you i-frame them via timing without a cooldown based skill?
can you modify your attacks like you can in an arpg? or is "sword strike (2.5gcd)" always gonna be a frontal cone, regardless of if you are crouching, rolling, locked on, or jumping? cause so far: no mmo has dont arpg combat.
every single example you provided are stand and hit mmos, even gw2, with its open world nature and actual ability to dodge roll out of attacks and zones, ultimately limits you to 10 buttons, 5 attacks(one an auto), 1 heal, 3 utility, and an ult, no modifying it based upon your actions.
i think an arpg mmo would be fun, do not get me wrong, but there is a reason it hasn't been done yet.
* The MMO population won't stand for the absolutely stupid and broken quest style used in Elden Ring.
* The toxicity in an open Souls MMO game would be off the charts. Think these forums spamming across the game all the time.
* The elitism and denigration of 'lesser' players will drive most normal MMO gamers away quickly and permanently.
* "Difficult - Repeat it 42 times to learn" combat model of Elden Ring simply would not fit into the MMO model. MMO players would not stand for it. Of course, there is the 'Raid or Die' crowd, but they make up a minuscule percentage of MMO populations.
Just my thinking on it, having played MMOs for thousands of hours and the Souls games in the high hundreds. YMMV
Shame it went down the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ from season 2 onwards because of Nexon management - but it was good while it lasted.
Half a million online. You could argue this is that 'mmo'
thats just your standard multiplayer game, no more a mmo then any other co-op game
Nope.
I'm sure it will happen after Miyazaki retires. But all the smart people will have abandoned the series at that point. Fromsoft will just be Japanese Blizzard at that point and the capitalism continues to win.
or world design
or enemy design
no. It's really not their strong point.
