How early do you unlock fast travel ?

I got baited into the Caelid chest at the start and ended up going around the whole area trying to find a way out, could I have just fast traveled out of there all along ? Am I a dumbass ?

Any graces you touch are immediately unlocked for fast travel, if you're in a cave you won't be able to fast travel

One bonfire just on your way out of that cave you were telepoted to, just don't go to the boss yet. Once you out, you can explore and ride south - south-west to find more bonfires.

Area can be rough at low level, but you still cannot lose in Souls games, you can only lose a few souls/runes.

Fuuuuuuu.... I didn't think I could fast travel until I got to Melina, I ran and parkoured all over the place, went all the wrong way to Radhan's Fort because I can't read a map when I could've teleported out !

head out of the cave to the right of where you spawn, avoid those bugs like the plague. Actually i think sneaking around the left side of the hut then cut to the right is the way.

For future reference, transporter chest traps also give a debuff that blocks fast travel, and it'll be dispelled when you touch or rest at a grace. At least two such chests put you at an outdoor location.

Just to point out, Once you beat a boss, in a cave, catacomb, or hero's grave. THEN you can fast travel out of them.
